어떤 음성을 듣고 있는가 / Whose Voice are You Listening to?
요한복음 10:1-21 / John 10:1-21
“나는 선한 목자다. 나는 내 양들을 알고, 내 양들은 나를 안다”(요한복음 10:14)
얼마 전에 잘 아는 지인이 보이스피싱 피해를 당했다. 안타까우면서도, 어떻게 그렇게 허술하게 속을 수가 있는지 어처구니가 없었다. 하지만 당사자의 입장에서 보면 그렇게 당할 수밖에 없을 정도로 사기의 구조가 치밀하고 정교했다. 이제는 인공지능의 발달로 인해 사기꾼들의 수법도 더욱 교묘해질 것이다. 음성도 영상도 다 위조해낼 수 있으니까 말이다. 세상에는 이런 보이스피싱범들뿐만 아니라 각양각색의 사기와 조작과 속임수가 난무한다. 모르는 번호가 뜨는 전화는 아예 받지 않는 것이 당연한 시대에 우리는 살고 있다. 거짓의 소리가 넘쳐나는 시대에 살고 있는 우리에게 듣고 분별하는 일, 잘 듣는 일의 중요성은 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않을 것이다.
예수님이 자신을 양의 문과 선한 목자로 소개하신다. 양의 문에는 두 가지 개념이 담긴다. 구원과 풍성한 생명이다. 문은 안과 밖을 구별한다. 문안은 보호와 안전, 그리고 구원이 있는 곳이다. 문안의 양떼들이 문밖으로 나서더라도 목자의 보호와 인도 아래서 안전하게 양질의 초장에서 꼴을 먹을 수 있다. 그 결과는 풍성한 생명이다. 반면에 문밖에는 도둑과 강도가 있다. 의도적으로 훔치고 빼앗고 파괴시키고 죽이려고 하는 세력이 있다는 말이다. 그러므로 목자의 우리에 들지 못하는 양들이 당하는 피해는 우연히 당하는 피해가 아니다. 의도적이고 조직적이고 집요하게 해치려는 세력이 있다. 그리고 그 결과는 파멸이다.
선한 목자도 두 가지의 개념으로 소개된다. 이름을 불러주는 친밀함과 목숨을 바치는 헌신이다. 목자는 양을 안다. 양도 목자를 안다. 이름을 알고 목소리를 안다. 그래서 양은 목자의 목소리를 듣고 따른다. 또한 선한 목자는 양을 위해 목숨을 버린다. 양이 목자의 이익을 위해 존재하는 것이 아니라 목자가 양을 위해 존재한다. 목숨까지 바쳐서 보호하고 돌본다. 목자와 양 사이에는 친밀함과 신뢰가 자리한다. 선한 목자의 반대편에 삯꾼이 있다. 삯꾼의 특징은 자기의 이익이 최우선이다. 양은 삯꾼의 이익을 위한 도구일 뿐이다. 삯을 받기 때문에 양을 돌보는 척하지만 이리를 만나서 위험해지면 혼자 도망친다. 삯꾼과 양은 서로 모른다. 친밀함도 신뢰도 없다.
내가 문 안의 양인지 문 밖의 양인지는 명백하다. 또한 내가 선한 목자에게 속했는지 삯꾼에게 속했는지도 백하다. 안전함, 친밀함, 풍성함, 공동체 의식, 이런 것들이 있으면 선한 목자에게 속한 것이고 문 안에 있는 것이다. 반면에 불안감, 두려움, 피해의식, 경쟁심, 빈곤, 피폐함, 이런 것들이 나를 주장하고 있으면 삯꾼에게 속했고 문 밖에 밀려나 도둑에게 노출되어 있다는 증거다.
선한 목자에게 속하고 싶다면 목자의 음성을 듣는 것부터 시작해야 한다. 목자가 양의 이름을 불러줄 때 들을 수 있어야 한다 (3절, 16절). 결국 듣는 것이 구원이다. 목자의 음성을 들으면 생명을 얻고, 잘 들으면 풍성한 생명을 얻는다. 목자의 음성이 희미해지면 어느 틈엔가 보이스피싱범의 음성 같은 것들이 비집고 들어온다. 나의 지인은 평생을 함께 살아온 배우자와 사별한 후 그 상실감을 틈타서 보이스피싱범의 음성이 들려왔다. 하지만 이제 다시 선한 목자 되신 예수 그리스도의 음성에 귀를 기울이면서 그 영혼이 소생하고 있다. 지금도 우리의 선한 목자는 친밀한 음성으로 우리의 이름을 하나하나 부르신다. 오늘 우리가 읽고 묵상하는 성경 말씀 한 구절, 한 단락에 선한 목자의 음성이 담겨져 있다. 그 음성이 들리기를 축복한다. 그 음성이 이끄는 대로 따를 수 있기를 축복한다. 그리하여 생명을 얻되 풍성한 생명을 얻게 되기를 축복한다.

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me” (John 10:14, NIV)
Recently, a close acquaintance of mine fell into the sophisticated trap of voice phishing and suffered greatly. Watching from the sidelines, I wondered, “How could anyone fall for such a transparent trick?” However, from the victim’s perspective, the web of deception was so intricate and ruthless that it was nearly impossible for an individual to withstand. In today’s world, where artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly advanced, the methods of scammers will only grow more cunning. We live in a “society of distrust” where voices and even videos can be forged by technology. In an era where it is common to be wary of any unfamiliar number, what we need most is a spiritual sense—the ability to discern the truth among the many voices we hear.
In the text, Jesus reveals Himself as both “the gate for the sheep” and “the good shepherd.” The “gate” represents the pathway to salvation and a life of abundance. A gate defines a boundary. Inside the gate is a place of salvation, where protection and rest are guaranteed. Even when the sheep go out through the gate, as long as they are under the shepherd’s careful guidance, they are not in a dangerous wilderness but in a lush pasture filled with quality food. Conversely, outside the gate, evil forces lurk, seeking to steal and destroy the sheep. The hardships faced by sheep who wander outside the shepherd’s fold are not coincidental; they are the result of persistent and organized attacks intended to destroy life.
The essence of the “Good Shepherd” lies in intimacy and sacrifice. The shepherd calls his sheep by name, and the sheep recognize his voice. The pinnacle of this relationship is the shepherd’s devotion in laying down his life for his sheep. The sheep are not a means to the shepherd’s profit; rather, the shepherd exists for the life of the sheep. This stands in stark contrast to the “hired hand,” whose only focus is self-interest. To him, the sheep are merely tools, and at the first sign of danger, he abandons them and flees without hesitation. Between a hired hand and the sheep, there is no personal trust.
Whether I am currently staying inside the gate is clearly revealed by examining my inner state. If peace, intimacy, an abundance of life, and a sense of community flow through my life, I am within the embrace of the Good Shepherd. However, if anxiety, fear, a victim mentality, and endless competitiveness dominate me, it is a sign that I have been misled by the voice of a hired hand and am exposed to the dangers outside the gate.
The first step to belonging to the Good Shepherd is to listen to His voice. When the Shepherd calls my name specifically, I must respond to that still, small voice (v. 3, 16). Ultimately, “listening” is the beginning of salvation. When we hear the Shepherd’s voice, we gain life, and when we are deeply immersed in that voice, we truly enjoy a life of abundance. When the Shepherd’s voice grows faint, the cunning temptations of the world squeeze in. Just as the voice of a scammer intruded upon my friend during the profound loss of a spouse, the enemy seeks our moments of weakness. Yet, my friend is now experiencing a restoration of the soul as they listen once again to the voice of Christ, our Good Shepherd. At this very moment, the Good Shepherd is calling your name. The voice of the Good Shepherd resides in each verse and every passage of the Bible that we read and meditate upon this day. I pray that His tender voice reaches your soul and that you follow it into the banquet of abundant life.
