우리는 살아가면서 많은 축복의 말들을 주고받는다. 그 축복대로 다 이루어졌으면 우리들의 삶은 참으로 품격이 있고 영광스러웠을 것이다. 그런데 실상이 그렇지 못하다면, 축복 가운데 상당 부분을 잃어버리거나 놓치고 사는 것이 아닌가 생각해 본다. 혹시 축복에 대한 오해나 편견이 있어서 그런 것은 아닐까?

창세기 49장은 야곱이 열두 아들을 축복하는 내용이다. 그런데 이 축복의 말들을 보면, 과연 이게 정말 축복인가 불편해지는 대목들이 있다. 자녀들을 향한 아버지의 축복이다. 그것도 임종을 앞두고 유언의 형식으로 전하는 축복이다. 마음을 다하여서 가장 복된 말만 해주는 게 당연하지 않은가. 그런데 축복이라기보다는 저주처럼 보이는 말들이 있어서 당황스럽다. 특히 시므온과 레위를 향한 말이나, 잇사갈에 대한 말이 그렇다. 시므온과 레위는 뿔뿔이 흩어진다는 내용이고, 잇사갈은 노예의 굴레를 맨다는 내용이다. 어떻게 이런 말이 축복이 될 수 있을까? 그런데 28절을 보면 분명 축복이라고 했다. “이들은 이스라엘의 열두 지파라. 이와 같이 그들의 아버지가 그들에게 말하고 그들에게 축복하였으니 곧 그들 각 사람의 분량대로 축복하였더라”. 각 사람의 분량대로라고 했으니, 각 지파별 맞춤형 축복이다. 각자의 기질과 형편에 맞추어진 가장 필요하고 적합한 축복이었다는 의미일 것이다.

그렇다면 꼭 좋은 말만 축복이라는 생각은 오해나 편견일 수 있겠다. 질책이나 경고, 때로는 저주처럼 들리는 말이라도 말한 사람의 의도에 따라서, 그리고 듣는 사람의 해석과 수용에 따라서 얼마든지 축복이 될 수 있다는 말이다. 먼저 이해해야 할 것은, 야곱은 단순히 자식을 축복하는 아버지의 입장일 뿐만 아니라, 선지자로서 민족의 운명을 예언하고 있다는 것이다. 각 지파들이 그들의 영적 실상을 정직하게 마주하고, 앞으로 닥칠 미래에 대해 엄중하게 성찰할 수 있도록 경고하는 것이다. 이것이 선지자를 통해서 선포되는 하나님 아버지의 심정이다. 이 심정을 이해하고 경고를 수용하면 경고가 축복이 될 것이다. 그러므로 축복이 정말 축복이 되려면 축복을 하는 사람만큼 그 축복을 받는 사람의 자세도 중요하다고 하겠다. 긴 역사 속에서 시므온 지파와 레위 지파의 여정을 살펴보면 이 진리가 보인다.

시므온과 레위의 기질적 문제점은 분노였다. 여동생이 겁탈당한 사건을 빌미로, 그래도 진정성을 가지고 청혼해 온 세겜과 히위족속을 다 죽인다. 하나님의 이름을 판 속임수로. “이에는 이, 눈에는 눈”이라는 동해복수법을 훨씬 넘어서는 과도한 분노였다. 시므온과 레위에게는 그 문제를 해결하는 것이 가장 큰 축복이라고 보신 것 같다. 이와 같은 경고성 축복을 받은 후 두 부족의 경로는 확연히 달라진다. 먼저 레위 지파는 분노를 승화시키는 법을 배운다. 모세가 시내산 위에서 하나님의 말씀을 받는 동안 산 아래에서는 아론의 묵인하에 금송아지를 만들어 숭배하는 배교행위가 벌어진다. 이를 본 모세가 분노하여 외친다. “누구든지 여호와의 편에 있는 자는 내게로 나아오라 하매 레위 자손이 다 모여 그에게로 가는지라”(출 32:26). 여기서 레위 자손은 인간의 혈기로 분출해내던 분노를 하나님을 위한 거룩한 분노로 승화시키는 법을 배운다. 그리고 그 결과로 복을 받는다. “모세가 이르되 각 사람이 자기의 아들과 자기의 형제를 쳤으니 오늘 여호와께 헌신하게 되었느니라. 그가 오늘 너희에게 복을 내리시리라”(출 32:29). 레위 지파와 스므온 지파가 극명하게 대비되는 사건은 그로부터 39년 후 싯딤에서 벌어진다. 이스라엘 사람들이 모압 여인들과 행음하고 모압의 신 바알브올을 섬긴다. 그로인해 하나님의 진노가 임하는데 이때 레위 지파의 비느하스가 시므온 지파의 시므리와 미디안 여인을 함께 처결함을써 하나님의 분노를 위로해 드린다. 이 일로 시므온 지파는 벌을 받아 전체 인구수가 59,300명에서 22,200명으로 급감한다. 그리고 결국 유다 지파에 흡수되어 소멸되고 만다. 하지만 레위 지파는 같은 운명을 예언 받았지만, 하나님의 편에 서는 법을 배움으로써 그 흩어짐을 축복으로 만들었다. 12지파 가운데 흩어짐을 통하여 제사장의 직분을 감당하게 된 것이다. 흩어지리라는 야곱의 예언은 두 지파에게 동일하게 성취되었지만 신앙적 결단과 반응에 따라 그 성취의 결과가 얼마나 달라질 수 있는지를 보여주는 성경의 대표적인 사건이다.

잇사갈 지파는 가나안에서 가장 비옥한 이스르엘 평원을 분배받았다. 그러나 그 풍요로운 환경은 도리어 타협과 안일함이라는 덫이 되어, 마침내 가나안 왕 야빈 아래에서 종노릇하는 굴레로 돌아왔다. “그는 쉴 곳을 보고 좋게 여기며 토지를 보고 아름답게 여기고 어깨를 내려 짐을 메고 압제 아래에서 섬기리로다”(창 49:15)라는 야곱의 예언은, 현실의 안락함에 주저앉은 잇사갈의 부끄러운 신세를 그대로 보여준다. 하지만 다행히도 그것이 끝은 아니었다. 가나안 왕 야빈의 철 병거 900대가 그들의 영토를 짓밟고 있을 때, 여선지자 드보라가 일어나자 잇사갈 역시 마침내 안일함을 깨고 용기를 내어 일어났다. “잇사갈의 방백들이 드보라와 함께하니 잇사갈과 같이 바락도 그의 뒤를 따라 골짜기로 달려 내려가니...”(사사기 5:15). 환경에 타협하던 나태함을 회개하고 공동체를 위해 스스로 짐을 지기로 결단했을 때, 그들은 하나님 나라의 건설에 적극적으로 쓰임받기 시작했다. 이 영적 반전은 다윗 시대에 이르러 정점을 이룬다. “잇사갈 자손 중에서 시세를 알고 이스라엘이 마땅히 행할 것을 아는 우두머리가 이백 명이니 그들은 그 모든 형제를 통솔하는 자라”(역대상 12:32). 사울 왕의 죽음으로 나라가 극심한 혼란에 빠졌을 때, 잇사갈 지파는 영적 타이밍과 시대의 흐름(시세)을 분별하는 지혜를 발휘하여 다윗을 왕으로 세우는 주역이 되었다. 야곱의 유언 속에서 그저 “짐이나 나르는 나귀” 같던 지파가, 국가의 영적·정치적 방향을 리드하는 지혜로운 지도자로 격상된 것이다.

예언이나 축복이 운명은 아니다. 그것들은 씨앗의 형태로 선포된다. 어떻게 그 말을 가꾸고 키워내느냐에 따라서 열매는 달라진다. 듣기 좋은 말이라고 다 축복도 아니고, 듣기 불편한 말이라고 다 저주도 아니다. 무슨 말을 듣든지 그 말에 담긴 하나님의 심정을 생각하고 믿음으로 반응하면 저주처럼 들리는 말도 축복으로 바꿀 수 있고, 축복처럼 들리는 말도 불순종과 안일함으로 화가 되게 할 수도 있다. 결국 축복을 축복되게 하는 것은 우리의 믿음이고 우리의 성찰이고 우리의 결단이다. 더 이상 축복을 놓치지 말고 살자. 그리고 무슨 말이든 다 축복으로 바꾸어버리는 믿음을 연습해 나가자.

Making Blessings Blessings (Genesis 49:5-7, 14-15)

Throughout our lives, we exchange countless words of blessing. Had every one of those blessings come to pass, our lives would surely have been filled with dignity and splendor. Yet, if our reality falls short, it leads one to ponder whether we are living our lives having lost or missed a significant portion of those blessings. Could it be that we harbor misunderstandings or prejudices regarding what a blessing truly is?

Genesis chapter 49 portrays Jacob blessing his twelve sons. However, as we examine these words of blessing, there are passages that cause discomfort, making us wonder if they can truly be called blessings. This is a father’s blessing upon his own children. Furthermore, it is a blessing delivered in the form of a last will and testament on his deathbed. Would it not be only natural for him to pour out his heart and speak only the most auspicious words? Yet, it is disconcerting to find words that resemble curses rather than blessings. This is particularly true of the pronouncements regarding Simeon, Levi, and Issachar. Simeon and Levi are told they will be scattered, while Issachar is destined to bear the yoke of a slave. How can such words possibly constitute a blessing?

Nevertheless, verse 28 explicitly states that these were indeed blessings: “All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, giving each the blessing appropriate to him.” [Gen 49:28] Since it was given according to each blessing appropriate to him, it represents a customized blessing for each tribe. This implies that it was the most necessary and fitting blessing, tailor-made to suit the unique temperament and circumstances of each individual.

If that is the case, the notion that only pleasant words constitute a blessing may well be a misconception or a prejudice. In other words, even statements that sound like rebukes, warnings, or at times even curses, can completely become blessings, depending on the speaker’s intent and the listener’s interpretation and acceptance. What we must understand first is that Jacob is not merely a father blessing his children; he is also prophesying the destiny of nations as a prophet. He is warning each tribe so that they may honestly confront their spiritual reality and solemnly reflect upon the future that lies ahead. This reflects the very heart of God the Father, proclaimed through His prophet. If one understands this heart and accepts the warning, the warning itself will become a blessing. Therefore, for a blessing to truly become a blessing, the attitude of the recipient is just as crucial as that of the one bestowing it. This truth unfolds clearly when we examine the journeys of the tribes of Simeon and Levi through the long corridors of history.

The inherent flaw in the temperament of Simeon and Levi was their anger. Using the violation of their sister as a pretext, they slaughtered the people of Shechem and the Hivites, who had nevertheless approached them with a sincere proposal of marriage—and they did so through a deception that profaned the name of God. It was an excessive fury that went far beyond the law of retaliation, “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” It appears God saw that resolving this very issue would be the greatest blessing for Simeon and Levi.

After receiving this cautionary blessing, the paths of the two tribes diverged drastically. First, the tribe of Levi learned to sublimate their anger. While Moses was receiving the word of God atop Mount Sinai, an act of apostasy occurred below, where the people fashioned and worshiped a golden calf with Aaron’s acquiescence. Upon witnessing this, Moses cried out in anger: “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me.” And all the Levites rallied to him. [Ex 32:26] Here, the descendants of Levi learned to channel the wrath they once vented through human rashness into a holy indignation for God. As a result, they received a blessing. “Then Moses said, ‘You have been set apart to the Lord today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day.’” [Ex 32:29]

The event that stands in stark contrast between the tribe of Levi and the tribe of Simeon took place thirty-nine years later at Shittim. The people of Israel committed whoredom with the women of Moab and worshiped Baal of Peor, the god of Moab. Consequently, the wrath of God fell upon them; at that moment, Phinehas of the tribe of Levi executed Zimri of the tribe of Simeon along with a Midianite woman, thereby appeasing the anger of God. Because of this, the tribe of Simeon was punished, and their entire population plummeted from 59,300 to 22,200. Ultimately, they were absorbed into the tribe of Judah and ceased to exist.

In contrast, though the tribe of Levi had received the same prophecy of dispersion, they transformed that scattering into a blessing by learning to stand on the Lord’s side. Through their dispersion among the twelve tribes, they came to fulfill the sacred office of the priesthood. Jacob’s prophecy that they would be scattered was fulfilled equally in both tribes, yet this stands as a premier scriptural testament to how vastly the outcome of a prophecy’s fulfillment can differ based on one’s spiritual resolve and response.

The tribe of Issachar was allotted the Jezreel Valley, the most fertile land in Canaan. Yet, that prosperous environment became a snare of compromise and complacency, ultimately returning them to the bondage of servitude under Jabin, king of Canaan. Jacob’s prophecy—“When he sees how good is his resting place and how pleasant is his land, he will bend his shoulder to the burden and submit to forced labor” (Genesis 49:15)—perfectly mirrors the shameful plight of Issachar, who settled into the comforts of reality.

Fortunately, however, that was not the end. When the nine hundred iron chariots of Jabin, king of Canaan, were trampling their territory, the prophetess Deborah arose, and Issachar, too, finally shook off their complacency, took courage, and stood up. The princes of Issachar were with Deborah, and they began to be actively utilized in the building of the nation. This spiritual turnaround reached its pinnacle in the era of King David. “From Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do—200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command” (1 Chronicles 12:32). When the nation fell into extreme chaos following the death of King Saul, the tribe of Issachar exercised the wisdom to discern spiritual timing and the currents of the times, playing a pivotal role in establishing David as king. A tribe that had seemed like nothing more than a “rawboned donkey bearing burdens” in Jacob’s testament was thus elevated to wise leaders guiding the nation’s spiritual and political destiny.

Prophecy or blessing is not destiny. They are proclaimed in the form of seeds. The fruit varies depending on how we cultivate and nurture those words. Not every word that is pleasant to hear is a blessing, nor is every word that is uncomfortable to hear a curse. Whatever words we hear, if we consider the heart of God embedded within them and respond in faith, we can transform words that sound like curses into blessings. Conversely, words that sound like blessings can be turned into calamity through disobedience and complacency. Ultimately, what makes a blessing a true blessing is our faith, our reflection, and our resolve. Let us live no longer missing out on blessings. Instead, let us practice the faith that transforms any and every word into a blessing.

정보의 과잉이 곧 진실의 빈곤을 낳는 시대다. 역설적이게도 범람하는 데이터의 홍수 속에서 우리는 진짜보다 조작된 가짜와 왜곡된 단면들을 더 자주 접한다. 정교한 딥페이크 영상과 자극적인 가짜 뉴스, 교묘하게 편집된 폭로글이 매일같이 쏟아진다. 무엇이 진실인지 분간하기 어려운 혼돈 속에서 현대인은 본능적으로 질문을 던진다. “그거 진짜야? 팩트체크 해봤어?” 이제 눈에 보이는 사실을 규명하는 팩트체크는 이 불투명한 시대를 살아가기 위한 필수적인 생존 기술이자 지혜로 자리 잡았다. 하지만 과연 팩트체크만으로 모든 문제를 해결할 수 있을까? 진실을 발견할 수 있을까? 삶이 좋아지고 세상이 좋아질까? 단순히 진실을 알게 된다고 해서 그것이 곧장 문제를 해결하고, 억울함을 치유하고, 용서로 연결되고, 실체적 해방과 감정적 자유함을 누리게 하는 것은 아니다. 오히려 적나라한 팩트를 마주하는 순간, 무저갱과 같은 인간성의 추악한 실체를 보게 되고, 더 깊은 고통의 심연 속으로 빨려 들어가기 쉽다. 사실의 규명, 그 자체는 결코 문제 해결의 열쇠가 될 수 없다.

성경은 우리에게 눈에 보이는 사실, 그 너머의 진실을 보게 한다. 그곳에는 현상의 차원을 뛰어넘는 또 다른 진실, 즉 영적 진실이 존재한다. 애굽의 총리가 된 요셉의 서사와 고백을 통해서 팩트의 세계와 영적 진실의 세계가 어떻게 다르며, 어떻게 서로 연결되어 있는지, 또 어떻게 해석되어야 하는지를 배울 수 있기를 바란다. 모진 세월을 지나 마침내 형들 앞에 선 요셉이 자신의 정체를 밝힌다. 그리고 방 안의 공기를 뒤흔들 만큼 격렬한 울음을 터뜨린다. 그 통곡이 얼마나 처절했는지, 궁의 벽을 넘어 바로의 처소에까지 선명하게 닿았다고 한다.

“요셉이 큰 소리로 우니 애굽 사람에게 들리며 바로의 궁중에 들리더라” (창 45:2)

터져 나온 울음은 단순한 감정의 배설이 아니었다. 그 안에는 요셉이 이국땅에서 홀로 견뎌내야 했던 수십 년의 가혹한 사실(Fact)들이 고스란히 녹아 있었다. 가장 신뢰했던 혈육들에게 배신당한 슬픔, 깊은 구덩이에 던져졌던 참담함, 노예의 사슬에 묶여 마주했던 극심한 공포와 외로움, 보디발의 집에서 뒤집어쓴 억울한 누명과 차디찬 지하 감옥의 절망, 그리고 생이별해야 했던 아버지 야곱을 향한 뼈에 사무치는 그리움이 그 울음 안에 켜켜이 쌓여서 참으로 한스러운 곡성으로 터져나왔을 것이다. 울음소리가 바로의 궁중에까지 들렸다는 진술은 물리적 가청거리에 대한 설명이 아니었다. 얼마나 그 울음이 한스러웠으면 듣는 모든 사람들의 입에 오르내려 궁중에까지 퍼졌 나갔겠는가.

드러난 사실만 놓고 본다면, 요셉만큼 서럽고 억울하고 외롭고 처절했던 인생은 없을 것이다. 가장 가까운 사람들의 시기와 질투로 인해 인생을 송두리째 빼앗긴 피해자였다. 그것은 누구도 부인할 수 없는 실체적 사실이었다. 만약 요셉이 눈앞의 가혹한 팩트만을 붙잡고 살아왔다면, 그의 울음은 피의 복수를 다짐하는 분노의 곡성이었을 것이다. 그러나 눈물을 거둔 요셉의 입술에서 흘러나온 고백은 완전히 다른 서사를 말한다.

“당신들이 나를 이곳에 팔았다고 해서 근심하지 마소서 한탄하지 마소서 하나님이 생명을 구원하시려고 나를 당신들보다 먼저 보내셨나이다… 그런즉 나를 이리로 보낸 이는 당신들이 아니요 하나님이시라” (창 45:5, 8)

여기서 요셉은 팩트를 부인하지 않는다. 사실을 왜곡하거나 모호하게 덮어두지 않는다. 형들이 자신을 팔아넘겼다는 악행은 엄연한 팩트다. 그러나 요셉은 팩트 너머를 보고 있다. 그 잔인한 팩트조차 도구로 삼아 일하신 하나님의 선한 의도와 주권적 개입을 통찰하고 있는 것이다.

우리의 삶 또한 이와 결이 같다. 누구든지 한 평생을 걸어가며 수많은 아프고 차가운 사실들과 필연적으로 충돌한다. 그때 우리는 제대로 된 팩트체크를 위한 차가운 이성이 필요하다. 상황을 왜곡 없이 들여다보는 객관적 관찰력과 감정에 휘둘리지 않는 편견 없는 판단력, 그리고 추악한 진실마저 직시하려는 담대한 용기가 요구된다. 그러나 여기서 멈추어서는 안 된다. 한 걸음 더 나아가, 사실 너머에 존재하는 영적 실체를 볼 수 있어야 한다. 이것은 온전히 해석의 영역이다. 여기에는 계산기를 두드리는 지성이 아니라, 고통을 다루시는 하나님의 심정과 속성에 대한 깊은 영적 이해가 필요하다. 나를 주저앉힌 그 고난을 관통하는 하나님의 의도와 계획이 무엇인지를 헤아려야 하며, 그 모든 결핍과 깨어진 상황을 반전시키실 하나님의 능력에 대한 신뢰를 가져야 한다. 그리고 자신의 내면을 살피는 성찰과 세상을 살피고 관통하는 통찰이 요구된다. 이러한 영적 해석의 필터를 통과할 때에야 비로소 보이지 않던 사실 너머의 진실이 보이고, 이해되지 않던 난제의 실마리가 풀린다. 그 결과 곪아 터졌던 상처가 치유되고, 진정한 용서의 문이 열린다. 또한 무엇보다도, 나를 살리고 마침내 세상도 살려낼 생명의 길이 보이기 시작한다.

오늘 요셉의 고백은 우리를 향한 엄중한 도전이 된다. 세상의 팩트체크는 시시비비를 가려낼 수 있을지 모르지만, 인간을 좁고 차가운 감옥에 가둘 수도 있다. 그러나 믿음의 영적 해석은 영혼을 자유케 하고 살아갈 길을 보게 한다. 그러므로 드러난 사실(Fact)보다 본질적인 진실을 보는 신앙의 시선, 곧 영적 해석(Faith)이 필요하다. 세상은 끊임없이 팩트를 따지며 칼날을 겨누라고 우리를 다그치지만, 믿음의 사람은 사실 너머의 주권자를 신뢰함으로 원망을 찬양으로, 상처를 사명으로 승화시킨다. 오늘 하루, 내 삶을 옥죄는 차가운 사실들 위에 하나님의 따뜻한 영적 해석이 오월의 햇살처럼 덮이기를 간절히 소망한다.

The Warm Sunshine of May Upon Cold Facts: What Matters More Than Fact-Checking (Genesis 45:1–8)

We live in an age where an abundance of information breeds a poverty of truth. Paradoxically, amidst this overwhelming deluge of data, we encounter fabricated falsehoods and distorted fragments far more frequently than the genuine article. Sophisticated deepfakes, sensationalized fake news, and subtly manipulated exposés pour forth daily. In this chaotic state where truth remains elusive, modern individuals instinctively ask, “Is it real? Have you fact-checked it?” Fact-checking—the act of verifying visible data—has established itself as an indispensable survival skill and a vital wisdom for navigating these opaque times. Yet, can fact-checking alone truly resolve our dilemmas? Can it uncover ultimate truth? Will it better our lives and elevate the world? Simply grasping a fact does not instantly rectify a grievance, heal an injustice, foster forgiveness, or bestow substantive liberation and emotional freedom. Rather, the moment we confront naked, unvarnished facts, we often glimpse the grotesque reality of human nature—an abyss akin to a bottomless pit—and find ourselves easily dragged into a deeper chasm of suffering. The mere elucidation of facts can never be the key that unlocks the resolution to our existential struggles.

Scripture, however, directs our gaze beyond visible facts to the profound truth residing beneath. There exists another realm of truth that transcends mere phenomena—a spiritual reality. Through the narrative and confession of Joseph, who rose to become the prime minister of Egypt, we seek to discern how the world of facts and the world of spiritual truth differ, how they intertwine, and how they ought to be interpreted. Having endured bitter, relentless years, Joseph finally stands before his brothers and reveals his identity. He then bursts into a weeping so passionate that it reverberates through the room. So poignant and piercing was his lamentation that it echoed far beyond the palace walls, reaching the ears of Pharaoh’s household.

“And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh’s household heard about it.” (Genesis 45:2, NIV)

This sudden torrent of weeping was no mere emotional catharsis. Within it lay the accumulation of decades of harsh, unyielding facts that Joseph had been forced to endure alone in a foreign land: the sorrow of betrayal by the very flesh and blood he trusted most, the wretchedness of being cast into a deep pit, the acute terror and loneliness borne under the shackles of slavery, the false accusations endured in Potiphar’s house, the despair of a cold dungeon, and a bone-deep yearning for his father, Jacob, from whom he had been violently torn apart. All these grievances had layered heavily within him, ultimately erupting into this profoundly sorrowful cry. The scriptural note that his weeping was heard throughout Pharaoh’s palace is not merely a description of physical audibility; rather, it signifies a grief so agonizing that it resonated with all who heard it, echoing into the highest halls of the royal court.

If we evaluate his life solely by outward facts, few existences could mirror the sorrow, injustice, loneliness, and sheer desolation of Joseph’s. He was a victim whose entire life was plundered by the envy and jealousy of his own kin—an undeniable, substantive reality. Had Joseph clung only to these cruel, immediate facts, his weeping would surely have been a cry of rage, a vow of bloody vengeance. Yet, once his tears subsided, the confession that flowed from Joseph’s lips wove an entirely different narrative.

“And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you... So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God.” (Genesis 45:5, 8, NIV)

In this profound moment, Joseph does not deny the facts. He neither distorts reality nor glosses over it with ambiguity. The malice of his brothers in selling him away remains an indisputable fact. Yet, Joseph looks far beyond the immediate fact. He perceives with spiritual insight the benevolent intention and sovereign intervention of God, who utilized even that cruel reality as an instrument for His divine purpose.

Our lives follow a similar texture. Over the course of a lifetime, every individual inevitably collides with numerous painful and cold realities. In those moments, we require a cool, discerning reason to conduct a proper fact-check. It demands an objective power of observation to view circumstances without distortion, an unbiased judgment unswayed by emotion, and a bold courage to face even the most grotesque truths. Yet, we must not tarry there. We must take a step further, opening our eyes to the spiritual reality that unfolds beyond the surface of facts.

This belongs entirely to the realm of interpretation. It requires not a calculating intellect, but a deep spiritual comprehension of the heart and nature of God, who orchestrates our journeys through suffering. We must ponder the divine intent and plan that weave through the hardships that bring us to our knees, and we must harbor a steadfast trust in God’s power to redeem every deficiency and broken circumstance. This calls for introspection to examine our inner selves and insight to perceive the world around us. Only when passing through the filter of this spiritual interpretation does the unseen truth beyond the facts unveil itself, and the threads of otherwise inexplicable enigmas begin to unravel. Consequently, festering wounds find true healing, and the door to genuine forgiveness swings open. Above all else, the path of life—which revives our souls and ultimately breathes life into the world—begins to appear.

Today, Joseph’s confession stands as a solemn challenge to us. While the world’s fact-checking may discern right from wrong, it can also confine a person within a narrow, cold prison. Conversely, the spiritual interpretation of faith liberates the soul and reveals the path forward. Therefore, we need the eyes of faith—a spiritual lens (Faith) that gazes upon the essential truth rather than merely the apparent facts (Fact). Though the world incessantly urges us to pore over facts and wield them like a blade, a person of faith sublimates resentment into praise and transforms wounds into a divine calling by trusting the Sovereign One who rules beyond those facts. This day, I earnestly hope that God’s warm, spiritual interpretation will blanket the cold facts that constrain our lives, draping over them like the radiant sunshine of May.

지금 미국은 두 개의 거대한 정치세력이 충돌하고 있다. 기존의 공화당과 민주당의 충돌이 아니다. 정치의 문법이 바뀌고 있는 것이다. 팔란티어의 피터 틸과 밴스 부통령으로 대표되는 소위 뉴 라이트라고 불리는 그룹이 있고, 그 대척점에 기존의 체제를 유지하려는 테크노 리버럴 그룹이 있다. 뉴 라이트는 기성의 관료주의에 염증을 느끼고 강력한 첨단 기술을 기반으로 현 체제를 무너뜨리고 성과와 효율성, 실력과 속도가 주도하는 새로운 질서를 만들려고 한다. 반면에 테크노 리버럴, 혹은 테크노 글로벌리즘을 표방하는 그룹에는 마이크로소프트, 구글 등 테크 기업과 아이비리그로 대표되는 학교들, NYT와 CNN 등 기성 언론들이 폭넓게 분포한다. 결국 현 체제를 부정하고 새로운 체제를 만들려는 세력과 기득권과 기성질서를 유지하려는 세력이 대충돌을 하고 있는 양상이다. 뉴 라이트 그룹은 현재의 자유민주주의 체제의 유효기간이 끝났다고 생각한다. 너무 비효율적이고 이념적이어서 중국과 같은 일사불란한 체제와의 싸움에서 이길 수 없다고 판단하기 때문이다. 그래서 소수 엘리트 집단의 강력한 리더십이 필요하다고 주장한다. 이들은 실리콘밸리의 돈과 기술에 가톨릭의 전통적 가치관을 접목하고 더하여서 노동계급의 분노까지 하나로 묶어, 기존의 자유주의 질서를 대체하려는 강력한 우파 포퓰리즘 그룹이라고 할 수 있겠다. 밴스가 미국의 부통령이 된 것은 이들이 더 이상 급진적 소수가 아니라 미국의 주류세력의 한 축으로 등장한 것을 의미한다고 하겠다.

요셉이 애굽의 총리가 되고 권력을 독점하여 7년의 흉년을 극복해 나가는 과정을 자세히 들여다보면 많은 질문들이 생기는데, 하나씩 묻고 답을 찾아 나가다 보면 성경의 이야기가 현재의 정치, 경제적 상황과 만나는 지점이 있다는 것을 발견하게 된다.

먼저, 요셉이 애굽 정치에 데뷔하게 되는 계기가 7년 풍년과 7년 흉년에 대한 꿈이다. 하나님은 바로에게 왜 이런 꿈을 주셨을까? 당연히 미래의 사건을 미리 알려줌으로써 흉년 동안에도 굶어 죽는 사람이 없도록 대비하라는 의도일 것이다. 그렇다면 아예 극단적인 풍년이나 흉년 없이 매년 적당한 수확이 이루어지도록 해주시면 더 좋은 것 아닌가? 왜 굳이 풍년도 주고 흉년도 주셔서 위기 상황을 만드시는가 말이다. 하나님이 아닌 이상, 하나님의 의도를 백 퍼센트 정확하게 알 수는 없겠지만 짐작은 해 볼 수 있겠다. 매년 예측 가능하고 통제 가능한 형태로 농사가 이루어진다면, 인간은 한없이 교만해져서 하나님을 찾거나 의지할 필요를 전혀 느끼지 못할 것이다. 개인의 삶에 행과 불행이 교차하는 것도 같은 이치라고 느껴진다.

왜 요셉만 꿈을 해석할 수 있게 하셨을까? 이 질문은 비교적 대답이 쉽다. 하나님은 요셉을 애굽 정치의 중앙 무대에 데뷔시키고 싶으셨다. 그리고 요셉을 통해서 하나님의 뜻이 애굽과 고대 근동 지역에 펼쳐지길 원하셨다.

바로는 어떻게 그토록 신속하고 단호하게 요셉에게 권력을 나누어 줄 수 있었을까? 요셉이 권력을 잡고 나서도 여전히 애굽 사람들은 이스라엘 사람들과 밥상을 같이 하지 않을 만큼 애굽의 민족적 우월의식이 강력했던 것을 생각하면 바로의 결단은 매우 이례적이다. 아마도 바로는 이념이나 민족 감정보다 더 중요한 것은 실질적인 문제 해결 능력과 효용성이라고 본 것 같다. 매우 실용적인 리더였던 것이다. 만약 이런 리더가 지금 미국 정치판에 있다면 엔비디아의 젠슨 황이나 애플의 팀 쿡 같은 실용주의적 경제인들의 전폭적인 지지를 받을 것이다. 그리고 바로는 제사장 가문과의 혼인을 통해서 요셉에게 정치적 배경도 만들어 줄 줄 알았다. 정치적 감각도 뛰어난 정치인이었던 것이다.

절대 권력을 위임받은 요셉은 7년간 20퍼센트씩 곡식을 세금으로 걷어서 비축한다. 그런데 이렇게 비축한 곡식을 흉년 때는 백성들에게 돈을 받고 판다. 여기서 살짝 불편한 질문이 생긴다. 흉년을 대비한 세금으로 비축한 곡식이라면 흉년에는 그냥 나누어 줘야지 값을 받고 판다? 그래서 결국 모든 돈과 땅과 가축을 바로의 소유로 만들고 백성들도 바로의 종으로 만든다면 이런 정치가 좋은 정치인가? 결과적으로 바로에게 모든 돈과 권력이 집중되었다. 과연 누구를 위한 정치인가?

모든 백성들을 종으로 만들고 나서 다시 토지를 위탁해 주고 토지세를 20퍼센트씩 받았다. 비율은 같은 20퍼센트였지만 먼저는 풍년일 때였고 후에는 흉년일 때였다. 만약 독재적 리더십이 없었다면 흉년 때 20퍼센트의 세금을 걷는 것은 엄청난 조세 저항을 불러왔을 것이다. 그러나 이미 종이 된 백성들은 아무런 저항 없이 요셉의 조세 제도에 순응했다. 제도는 극단적 계획 경제였고 방법은 독재적이었지만 결과는 모두에게 좋았다. 요셉은 신속하고 효율적이었다. 성과가 확실했다. 체제와 절차를 뛰어넘는 속도와 유능함이 있었고 권력과 자산을 집중시키는 창조적 독점이 있었다. 요즘 뉴 라이트들이 좋아할 만한 리더십을 요셉은 발휘한 것이다. 이렇게 해서 요셉이 바로에게 집중시켜 준 부와 권력은 400년 후에 이스라엘을 억압하는 힘이 되었으니 역사의 아이러니가 아닐 수 없다.

성경은 경제 정책이나 정치 제도를 가르쳐 주기 위한 텍스트가 아니니까, 성경에서 직접적으로 어떤 제도나 정책을 가져와서 적용하는 것은 비현실적일 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 몇 가지 핵심적인 원리들은 배울 수 있다.

첫째, 역사는 하나님이 경영하시는 것이지 사람이 만들어 가는 것이 아니다. 나라들의 역사도 그렇고 개인의 역사도 그러하다. 그러므로 겸손해야 하고, 하나님의 역사 경영에 대한 안목이 있어야 한다. 그리고 그 틀 안에서 사람들이 해야 할 일들과 할 수 있는 일들을 모색해야 할 것이다.

둘째, 어떤 제도나 체제가 절대적일 수는 없다는 것이다. 공산주의는 말할 것도 없지만, 자유민주주의 체제도 절대 진리일 수는 없다. 체제나 제도보다 더 중요한 것은 사람이다. 하나님의 뜻을 땅 위에서 실현해 낼 수 있는 요셉과 같은 사람이 없다면, 하나님이 아무리 꿈을 보여주시고 그것보다 더 직접적인 가이드라인을 주신다고 해도 소용이 없다. 그러니 이념이나 체제를 놓고 싸우기보다는 사람을 돌보고 사람을 키워야 한다. 요셉에게 정치는 굶는 사람이 없는 것이었다. 이념 과잉에서 약간은 벗어나자는 말이다.

셋째, 목표와 수단 사이에 균형 감각이 필요하다. 목표가 선하면 수단은 어떠해도 괜찮다는 사람들도 있고, 오히려 목표보다는 과정과 수단이 더 중요하다고 생각하는 사람들이 있다. 물론 목표도 선하고 수단도 선하면 더할 나위 없이 좋은 것이지만, 그런 경우는 그렇게 흔치 않다. 뉴 라이트들이 피곤해하는 부분도 기성 정치인들이 지나치게 정치적 올바름과 다양성 원칙에 경도되어 오히려 보수적 가치를 훼손하고 있고, 절차적 문제에 붙잡혀서 아무런 성과를 만들어내지 못하는 점이다. 펜타닐 문제와 홈리스 문제만 봐도 그렇다. 그렇다고 소수 엘리트 집단에 의한 성과주의를 마냥 따라갈 수는 없다. 트럼프도, 밴스도, 피터 틸이나 일론 머스크도, 요셉은 아니기 때문이다. 요셉의 절대 기준은 하나님이었지만 뉴 라이트의 절대 기준은 자본과 기술이다. 요셉의 가치는 사람들 밥 먹이는 일이었지만 그들의 가치는 성과와 패권이다. 요셉과 같은 인물이 지금은 없다. 그러므로 적절한 균형이 필요하다. 성과주의도 절차주의도 너무 경직되면 안 된다. 균형을 잡아줄 영성이 요구된다.

테크놀로지의 발달로 세상은 급변하고 있다. 정치 지형과 체제에도 지각변동이 일어나고 있다. 진보와 보수로 양분되어 있던 가치관도 다양하게 분화되고 있다. 부의 창출과 분배 방식에도 엄청난 변화가 이미 시작되었다. 정보의 생산과 유통 과정도 완전히 바뀌었다. 선과 악에 대한 개념, 종교적 신념, 국가와 민족이라는 공동체의 개념도 흔들리고 있다. 절대적인 가치 혹은 절대적인 기준이 흔들리거나 부정되고 있다. 그러므로 이럴수록 우리는, 하나님의 사람들은, 오직 하나님께 집중하고, 하나님의 말씀을 붙잡아야 한다. 그것이 흔들리는 세상에서 우리를 견고하게 지켜줄 기준이 될 것이다. 요셉이 보디발의 집에서도 견고했고, 감옥에서도 견고했고, 바로의 궁에서도 견고했으며, 풍년에나 흉년에나 항상 견고했던 것처럼, 우리도 하나님의 말씀을 붙잡고 그것으로 기준을 삼을 때, 격변하는 삶의 모든 정황 가운데서 견고할 수 있을 것이다.

Asking and Learning from Joseph the Politician (Genesis 41:25-36)

Right now, two massive political forces are clashing in the United States. It is not a clash between the traditional Republican and Democratic parties. The very grammar of politics is changing. There is a group called the so-called New Right, represented by Palantir’s Peter Thiel and Vice President Vance, and on the opposite side, there is the Techno-Liberal group trying to maintain the existing system. Sicking of established bureaucracy, the New Right seeks to tear down the current system based on powerful advanced technology and create a new order driven by performance, efficiency, competence, and speed. On the other hand, the group advocating Techno-Liberals or Techno-Globalism is widely distributed, including tech companies such as Microsoft and Google, universities represented by the Ivy League, and established media outlets like the NYT and CNN. Ultimately, it is a grand clash between the force trying to negate the current system and create a new one, and the force trying to maintain vested interests and the established order. The New Right group believes that the expiration date of the current liberal democratic system has passed. This is because they judge that it is too inefficient and ideological to win a fight against a highly disciplined system like China’s. Therefore, they argue that the powerful leadership of a small elite group is necessary. They combine the money and technology of Silicon Valley with traditional Catholic values, and further unite the anger of the working class into one, which can be described as a powerful right-wing populist group seeking to replace the existing liberal order. Vance becoming the Vice President of the United States signifies that they are no longer a radical minority but have emerged as one of the pillars of the mainstream force in America.

If we look closely at the process through which Joseph became the prime minister of Egypt, monopolized power, and overcame the seven years of famine, many questions arise. As we ask them one by one and find answers, we discover that the biblical story intersects with the current political and economic situation.

First, the occasion for Joseph’s debut in Egyptian politics is the dream about the seven years of plenty and seven years of famine. Why did God give Pharaoh such a dream? Naturally, the intention would be to forewarn him of future events so that he could prepare to ensure no one starves to death during the famine. If so, wouldn’t it be better if God allowed a moderate harvest every year without extreme years of plenty or famine? Why bother giving both plenty and famine to create a crisis situation? Unless one is God, it is impossible to know God’s intention one hundred percent accurately, but we can make a guess. If farming were carried out in a completely predictable and controllable manner every year, humans would become endlessly arrogant and feel absolutely no need to seek or rely on God. It feels like the same principle applies to the alternation of fortune and misfortune in an individual’s life.

Why did God allow only Joseph to interpret the dream? This question is relatively easy to answer. God wanted to debut Joseph on the center stage of Egyptian politics. And through Joseph, He wanted His will to unfold across Egypt and the ancient Near East.

How could Pharaoh divide and grant power to Joseph so swiftly and decisively? Considering that Egypt’s sense of ethnic superiority was so strong that even after Joseph took power, Egyptians still would not share a dining table with Israelites, Pharaoh’s decision is highly unusual. It seems Pharaoh saw that practical problem-solving ability and utility were more important than ideology or ethnic sentiments. He was a highly pragmatic leader. If such a leader were in the American political arena today, they would receive the full support of pragmatic businesspeople like Nvidia’s Jensen Huang or Apple’s Tim Cook. Furthermore, Pharaoh knew how to create a political background for Joseph through marriage into a priestly family. He was a politician with excellent political instincts as well.

Joseph, entrusted with absolute power, collects and stockpiles grain as a 20 percent tax for seven years. However, during the famine, he sells this stockpiled grain to the people for money. Here, a slightly uncomfortable question arises. If it is grain stockpiled through taxes to prepare for a famine, shouldn’t it be given out for free during the famine instead of being sold for a price? If this ultimately turns all money, land, and livestock into Pharaoh’s property and makes the people Pharaoh’s servants, is this truly good politics? As a result, all wealth and power were concentrated in Pharaoh. For whom, indeed, was this politics?

After turning all the people into servants, he leased the land back to them and collected a 20 percent land tax. The ratio was the same at 20 percent, but the former was during the years of plenty and the latter was during the famine. Without autocratic leadership, collecting a 20 percent tax during a famine would have triggered immense tax resistance. However, the people, who had already become servants, conformed to Joseph’s tax system without any resistance. The system was an extreme planned economy and the method was autocratic, but the result was good for everyone. Joseph was swift and efficient. The performance was certain. There was speed and competence that transcended systems and procedures, and there was a creative monopoly that concentrated power and assets. Joseph demonstrated the exact kind of leadership that today’s New Right would love. The wealth and power that Joseph concentrated for Pharaoh in this way became the force that oppressed Israel 400 years later, making it an undeniable irony of history.

Since the Bible is not a text meant to teach economic policies or political systems, directly taking a certain system or policy from the Bible and applying it might be unrealistic. However, we can learn a few core principles.

First, history is managed by God, not made by humans. This is true for the history of nations as well as the history of individuals. Therefore, we must be humble and possess an eye for God’s management of history. And within that framework, we must seek out what people ought to do and what they can do.

Second, no system or regime can be absolute. Needless to say for communism, even the liberal democratic system cannot be an absolute truth. What is more important than a regime or a system is the person. Without a person like Joseph who can realize God’s will on earth, it is useless no matter how much God shows dreams or gives guidelines even more direct than that. Therefore, rather than fighting over ideologies or systems, we must care for people and cultivate people. To Joseph, politics meant that no one goes hungry. In other words, let us step back slightly from ideological excess.

Third, a sense of balance is needed between goals and means. There are those who believe that if the goal is good, any means is acceptable, while others believe that the process and means are more important than the goal itself. Of course, it would be best if both the goal and the means were good, but such cases are not very common. The part that tires the New Right is also that established politicians are overly leaning toward political correctness and principles of diversity, thereby undermining conservative values, and are caught up in procedural issues, failing to produce any performance. Just looking at the fentanyl problem and the homeless problem proves this. Even so, we cannot blindly follow the performance-driven approach led by a small elite group. This is because neither Trump, Vance, Peter Thiel, nor Elon Musk is Joseph. Joseph’s absolute criterion was God, but the New Right’s absolute criterion is capital and technology. Joseph’s value was feeding people, but their value is performance and hegemony. There is no figure like Joseph now. Therefore, an appropriate balance is required. Neither performance-driven approaches nor procedural approaches should become too rigid. Spirituality that can hold the balance is demanded.

With the development of technology, the world is changing rapidly. Tectonic shifts are occurring in the political landscape and systems as well. Values that were once divided into progressive and conservative are also diversifying in various ways. Tremendous changes have already begun in the methods of wealth creation and distribution. The process of information production and distribution has also completely changed. Concepts of good and evil, religious beliefs, and the concepts of community such as nation and ethnicity are also shaking. Absolute values or absolute criteria are being shaken or negated. Therefore, the more this happens, the more we, the people of God, must focus solely on God and hold onto God’s word. That will be the criterion that keeps us steadfast in a shaking world. Just as Joseph was steadfast in Potiphar’s house, steadfast in prison, steadfast in Pharaoh’s palace, and always steadfast in both plenty and famine, we too will be able to stand steadfast amidst all the changing circumstances of life when we hold onto God’s word and make it our standard.

비극은 계속된다. 밧단아람에서 돌아와서 에서와의 화해는 이루어냈었지만 야곱가족사의 비극은 끝나지 않았다. 이번에도 비극의 원인은 야곱의 자기중심적인 사고방식과 편애와 무신경함과 무책임성에서 유래된다. 열두 아들 중에 라헬에게서 태어난 요셉에게 가장 정이 가는 것은 어쩔 수 없다고 하더라도 그 애정을 너무 무책임하고 자기중심적으로 표현한 것이 문제였다. 왜 화려한 채색옷을 입혔을까? 그 옷 때문에 형들의 시기와 미움을 받게 될 것을 생각하지 않았다면 야곱은 너무 무신경한 것이다. 그리고 다른 아들들에게 너무 무책임했던 것이다. 요셉을 포함한 모든 자녀들에게 좋지 않은 일이었다. 본인은 만족하고 흐뭇했을지 모르겠지만 말이다. 형들을 전부 목축에 내보내고 요셉만 품에 끼고 있었던 것도 그렇다. 의복뿐만 아니라 모든 면에서 차별을 한 것이다. 그랬으면서 요셉을 형들에게 전령으로 보낸 것도 무신경한 처사였다. 나머지 아들들의 박탈감과 분노를 전혀 헤아리지 못했다.

형들의 시기심과 분노를 자극한 결정적 사건은 요셉의 꿈이었다. 야곱의 편애보다 요셉의 두 번에 걸친 꿈 이야기가 결정적으로 형들의 분노에 기폭제 역할을 했다. “꿈꾸는 녀석이 온다”, “그 녀석의 꿈이 어떻게 되나 보자” 이것이 요셉을 죽이기로 한 형들의 감정적 이유였다. 요셉에게 꿈을 주신 분은 하나님이실 것이다. 하지만 그것을 공개하고 표현하는 방식에서 요셉은 지혜롭지 못했다. 모두가 알다시피 요셉은 매우 지혜로운 사람었다. 그런 사람이 지혜롭지 않게 행동한 것은 순진함 때문일까, 교만 때문일까, 아니면 하나님이 그렇게 하게 하신 것일까?

가해자의 악행을 제쳐두고 피해자에게 이런 식으로 피해의 원인과 책임을 묻는 것은 부적절한 처사가 될 테니까 가해자들의 행위에 대해서도 따져봐야 할 것이다. 아무리 아버지의 편애가 있었고, 동생의 건방지고 꼴사나운 처신이 있었다고 하더라도, 동생을 죽이려고 했고, 인신매매로 팔아넘긴 것은 용납하기 어려운 죄다. 게다가 동생의 옷에 짐승의 피를 묻히고 동생이 죽었다고 거짓으로 아버지를 속여 죽음보다 더 처절한 고통에 빠트린 것은 정말 패륜적인 죄다.

사건에 관여된 세 부류의 인간들이 다 잘못이 있고 죄가 있다. 그러므로 나쁜 결과로 귀결되는 것은 당연하다고 하겠다. 그러나 우리가 아는 대로 결국은 좋은 결말이 되었다. 그렇다면 사람들의 나쁜 원인제공을 넘어서는 하나님의 간섭이 있었다고 봐야 마땅하다. 인간들의 죄와 허물과 약점을 각기 다른 색깔의 물감처럼 버무려서 하나님은 어떤 그림을 그리고 계셨던 것일까? 모두 자신의 무가치함과 싸우느라고 헛발질하고 있을 때 하나님은 어떤 가치와 의미를 만들어나가고 있었을까?

분명하게 드러나는 하나님의 의도는 이스라엘을 애굽으로 이주시키는 것이다. 이것은 이미 아브라함과 맺으신 언약에 포함되어 있다. 왜 애굽으로 보내셨을까? 물론 기근 때에 대비해서 보호하시려는 의도가 분명하다, 그러나 따져보면, 그때의 기근으로 가나안의 모든 사람들이 다 죽은 것은 아니지 않은가? 430년 이후에 애굽에서 가나안으로 돌아왔을 때 그곳에는 여리고 성과 같은 거대한 성곽도시가 있었다. 골리앗과 같은 거인족들이 있었다. 기드온 시대에도 한 번의 전투에 십사 만 오천 명을 투입할 정도로 막강한 세력을 형성한 미디안과 같은 나라들이 있었다. 야곱이 가나안에 머물러 있었다면 기근에 고생은 했었겠지만 야곱 역시도 그런 부족국가를 이룰 수 있지 않았을까? 그렇다면 첫 번째 이유 외에 또 다른 이유들도 있었다고 보여진다.

하나님은 구별된 민족을 이루시길 원하셨던 것 같다. 가나안과 동화되지 않은, 그러면서도 애굽과도 같지 않은, 하나님 백성으로서의 독자적 정체성을 지닌 민족을 말이다. 애굽의 고센땅은 그런 의미에서 최적의 장소였다고 생각된다. 짧은 기간 안에 한 부족에서 한 나라로 번성하기에 합당한 지리적 조건도 갖추었으면서 민족적 동일성과 정체성도 지켜나갈 수 있었으며 나중에 가나안으로 복귀시키기에도 적합한 지역이 바로 고센이었을 것이라고 생각된다. 그리고 한 민족으로 성장한 이스라엘을 가나안으로 이동시키면서 당대 최강국이었던 애굽뿐만 아니라 고대 근동 전체가 거대한 민족 이동을 통해 하나님을 보게 만드는 의도가 있었을 것이다. 또한 출애굽이라는 상징적인 사건을 통해서 하나님의 구원이라는 신학적 개념에 역사성과 실체성을 부여하여 모든 민족을 구원으로 초대하는 예표로 사용하려는 의도도 분명 있었으리라 믿어진다.

그러나 그런 지리적 역사적 신학적 맥락 외에 이 사건에 포함된 중요한 하나님의 의도가 한 가지 더 있다고 생각되는데, 그것은 야곱을 다루시는 하나님의 손길이다. 우리가 아는대로 야곱은 평생 동안 하나님의 계획이 이루어지길 믿고 기다리기보다는 자기 힘으로 쟁취하고자 했다. 그 세월이 그의 고백대로 “130년, 험악한 세월”이었다. 이번에는 하나님이 야곱의 손과 발을 다 묶어 버리신다. 아무것도 못하게. 이미 죽어 버린 자식을 위해서 야곱이 할 수 있는 일이 무엇이었을까? 그야말로 할 수 있는 일이 아무것도 없었다. 가슴 치며 애도하고 통곡하는 일 외에는. 만약에 요셉이 살아 있고 미디안 상인들에게 팔린 것을 야곱이 알았다면 어떻게 했을까? 전 재산을 팔아서라도 다시 되돌렸을 것이다. 만약에 요셉이 보디발의 집에서 종노릇을 하고 있는 것을 알았다면 어떻게 해서라도 다시 데리고 왔을 것이다. 만약에 요셉이 감옥에 갇힌 것을 알았다면 무슨 짓을 해서라도 빼내어 왔을 것이다. 그렇게 야곱이 최선을 다해서 요셉을 살려 내고 다시 데려왔다면 요셉이 30살이 되어서 야곱과 함께 기근을 당했을 때쯤 무엇이 되어 있을까? 형제들과 더불어 갈등하면서 자신의 무가치함과 싸우고 있을 뿐 달리 무엇을 할 수 있었을까? 그러나 야곱이 손발이 묶이고 아무것도 못하고 있으니까 하나님은 불과 13년 만에 아버지의 채색옷을 입었던 소년에게 애굽의 총리복을 입혔다. 야곱이 어떤 방식으로든 요셉의 인생에 끼어들었다면 하나님 계획의 모든 장면마다 방해만 되었을 것이다. 하나님이 사람의 인생에 어떤 계획을 가지고 일하실 때, 사람은 그냥 아무것도 안 하고 가만히 있는 것이 최선일 수 있다. 야곱의 인생 말년은 이 교훈을 뼈아프게 배우는 시기였던 셈이다.

구약성경은 이 교훈을, “너희는 가만히 있어 내가 하나님 됨을 알지어다”(시편 46:10절)라고 압축하고 있고, 신약성경은, “하나님을 사랑하는 자 곧 그의 뜻대로 부르심을 입은 자들에게는 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루느니라”(로마서 8:28절)고 정리한다. 예수 그리스도 안에서 우리 모두는 “하나님을 사랑하는 자요 또 그의 뜻대로 부르심을 입은 자들”이다. 세상사람들 모두가 자신의 무가치함과 싸우고 있다고 하더라도 우리는 더 이상 그럴 필요가 없다. 내가 아무 것도 할 수 없는 동안에도 하나님은 계획이 있고, 하나님의 일을 하고 계시니까. 가만히 있는 것이 아무 것도 안 하는 방관이 아니라 하나님이 일하시도록 자리를 내어드리는 적극적인 순종이니까. 하나님을 바라보는 일(Waiting for God)은 시간 낭비도 아니고 무가치한 일도 아니니까.

Even If Everyone Fights Their Own Worthlessness (Genesis 37:18-36)

The tragedy of Jacob’s family history continues. Although a reconciliation with Esau had been achieved after returning from Paddan-Aram, the tragedy of the family history did not end. This time, too, the cause of the tragedy originated from Jacob’s self-centered way of thinking, favoritism, mindlessness, and irresponsibility. Even if it was inevitable that he felt the most affection for Joseph, born of Rachel among the twelve sons, the problem was that he expressed that affection too irresponsibly and self-centeredly. Why did he dress him in an ornate robe? If he did not think that he would be envied and hated by his brothers because of that robe, Jacob was being too mindless. Furthermore, he was being too irresponsible toward his other sons. It was a bad thing for all the children, including Joseph—though he himself might have been satisfied and pleased.

It was the same regarding the fact that he sent all the brothers out for shepherding and kept only Joseph by his side. He discriminated in all aspects, not just in clothing. Even so, sending Joseph as a messenger to his brothers was a mindless act. He failed to completely fathom the sense of deprivation and anger felt by the rest of his sons.

The decisive event that provoked the brothers’ jealousy and anger was Joseph’s dreams. Rather than Jacob’s favoritism, the story of Joseph’s two dreams played a decisive role as a trigger for the brothers’ anger. “Here comes that dreamer!” “Let’s see what comes of his dreams.” This was the emotional reason for the brothers’ decision to kill Joseph. It must have been God who gave the dreams to Joseph. However, Joseph was not wise in the way he disclosed and expressed them. Did Joseph, a very wise person, act unwisely because of naivety, pride, or because God made him do so?

Since it would be an inappropriate act to set aside the perpetrator’s evil deeds and question the victim for the cause and responsibility of the harm in this manner, we must also examine the actions of the perpetrators. No matter how much there was father’s favoritism and the younger brother’s arrogant and unsightly conduct, attempting to kill a brother and selling him into human trafficking is an inexcusable sin. Moreover, dipping the brother’s robe in the blood of an animal and deceiving the father with a lie, plunging him into a pain more cruel than death, is a truly depraved sin.

All three groups of humans involved in the incident are at fault and have sinned. Therefore, it is natural that it leads to a bad outcome. However, as we know, even if the immediate results appear bad, the ultimate conclusion is good. If so, it is only right to see that there was God’s intervention that transcends the bad causes provided by humans. What kind of picture was God drawing by mixing the sins, flaws, and weaknesses of humans like paints of different colors?

The clearly revealed intention of God is to migrate Israel to Egypt. This was already included in the covenant made with Abraham. Why did He send them to Egypt? Of course, there was an intention to protect them in preparation for the famine, but does that mean everyone in Canaan died because of the famine at that time? When they returned to Canaan from Egypt 430 years later, there were giant fortified cities like Jericho. There were giant tribes like Goliath. Even in the era of Gideon, there were nations like Midian that formed a formidable force, deploying 145,000 men in a single battle. If Jacob had stayed in Canaan, he would have suffered from the famine, but couldn’t Jacob also have formed such a tribal state? If so, it seems there was another reason besides the first one.

God seems to have desired to establish a set-apart nation. A nation that is not assimilated with Canaan, yet not like Egypt, possessing a unique identity as God’s people. I think the land of Goshen in Egypt was the optimal place in that sense. I believe Goshen was the area suitable for thriving from a tribe to a nation within a short period, while maintaining national homogeneity and identity, and also suitable for returning to Canaan later.

However, beyond such geographical and historical contexts, I think there is one more important intention of God included in this incident, which is God’s hand in dealing with Jacob. As we know, throughout his life, Jacob sought to seize things by his own strength rather than believing and waiting for God’s plan to be fulfilled. Those years were, as he confessed, “130 years, my years have been few and difficult.” This time, God binds Jacob’s hands and feet. So that he can do nothing. What could Jacob have done for a child who was already dead? Truly, there was nothing he could do. Except for beating his breast, mourning, and wailing. If Joseph were alive and Jacob had known he was sold to Midianite merchants, what would he have done? He would have sold his entire fortune to bring him back. If he had known Joseph was serving as a steward in Potiphar’s house, he would have brought him back somehow. If he had known Joseph was imprisoned, he would have gotten him out by any means necessary. If Jacob had done his best to save Joseph and bring him back like that, what would Joseph have become by the time he was 30 and faced the famine with Jacob? He would have only been struggling with his own worthlessness while in conflict with his brothers; what else could he have done? But because Jacob’s hands and feet were tied and he was doing nothing, God made 17-year-old boy Joseph the Prime Minister of Egypt at age 30 in just 13 years. If Jacob had interfered in Joseph’s life in any way, he would have only been an obstacle in every scene of God’s plan. When God interferes in a person’s life with a certain plan, it might be best for the person to just do nothing and stay still. The latter years of Jacob’s life were a time of painfully learning this lesson.

The Old Testament compresses this lesson as, “He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God’” (Psalm 46:10), and the New Testament organizes it as, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). In Jesus Christ, we are all “those who love God and those who have been called according to His purpose.” Even if everyone is fighting their own worthlessness, we no longer need to do so. Because even while I can do nothing, God is doing God’s work. Because waiting for God is neither a waste of time nor a worthless thing.

인생에는 풀고 가지 않으면 안 되는 숙제가 있다. 사람이 살아가면서 모든 인간관계를 다 깔끔하게 유지하거나 매듭짓고 사는 것은 불가능하다. 다소간 껄끄럽고 불편해도 그냥 그러려니 하고 넘어가야 정신건강에 좋을 수도 있다. 하지만 방치하거나 무시하면 죽기 전에 무척 후회할 수밖에 없는 그런 관계가 있다. 특히 본인이 상처를 줌으로써 훼손된 관계라면 기회를 놓치지 전에 풀어야 한다.

인간은 자신의 삶을 하나의 완성된 이야기로 마무리지으려는 본능이 있다. 심리학에서는 이를 ‘자아 통합(Ego Integrity)’이라고 부른다. 내가 상처를 준 사건은 그 이야기 속에서 해결되지 않은 갈등으로 남는다. 인생의 마지막 페이지를 넘겨야 하는데, 중간의 커다란 얼룩을 지우지 못한 채 책을 덮어야 한다는 사실이 정신적 괴로움으로 남겨지는 것이다. 갈등을 해결하지 못하고 내가 먼저 떠나든지, 상대가 먼저 떠나게 되면, 남겨진 사람에게 그 상처는 최종적인 기억이 될 수밖에 없다. 자신이 영원히 상처를 준 사람으로 기억된다는 것은 돌이킬 수 없는 절망감이 될 수 있다. 또한 상대는 이제 사과를 받을 기회조차 박탈당하게 된다는 사실이 뼈아픈 자책으로 이어진다. 용서는 상대가 주는 선물이지만, 그 선물을 요청할 수 있는 권리는 살아있을 때만 유효하다. 심리학자 브로니 웨어의 기록에 따르면, 많은 임종 환자들이 “그때 내가 먼저 손을 내밀었더라면 내 마음이 지금처럼 무겁지는 않았을 텐데”라고 말한다고 한다. 용서받지 못한 채 떠나는 것은, 무거운 짐을 진 채로 영원의 길을 떠나는 것과 같은 무게감에 눌리는 고통이다.

야곱에게는 에서와의 관계가 무거운 짐이었다. 20년 만에 고향으로 돌아오면서, 새로운 삶을 살아야 하는데, 그 전에 에서와의 관계가 해결되지 않으면 새 삶이 시작될 수가 없는 것이다. 그리고 만약 야곱이 에서와 화해하지 않고 그대로 살았다면, 그는 노년기에 ‘형을 속인 사기꾼’이라는 자책에서 벗어나지 못했을 것이다. 그는 자신의 인생 이야기를 ‘속임수’로 끝내지 않고 ‘화해’로 완성하기 위해 목숨을 건 대면을 피할 수 없었다. 하지만 야곱에게 에서와의 관계만큼 힘들고 어려운 관계는 없었을 것이다. 사람들은 대개 공감능력이 있어서 다른 사람들의 상처와 아픔을 이해하고 보다듬어주려고 하는 경향이 있지만 유독 자신이 원인을 제공한 아픔에 대해서는 외면하려고 하는 강한 본능이 작동한다. 자신의 죄와 허물을 정면으로 마주하는 것이 고통스럽기 때문이다. 그래서 많은 경우, 관계의 회복은 하나님의 주권적인 간섭이 없으면 힘들다. 하나님의 은혜가 없이 오롯히 인간의 의지와 노력으로만 온전한 관계회복을 이룬다는 것은 어쩌면 불가능할지도 모른다.

이제 하나님은 무척 입체적으로 야곱과 에서의 화해를 도우신다. 첫번째의 개입이 “마하나임”이다. 야곱은 에서와 400명의 군대라는 위협 앞에 놓여 있다. 이때 만난 하나님의 사자들은 야곱에게, 너는 혼자가 아니며, 보이지 않는 하늘의 군대가 너를 보호하고 있다는 강력한 메시지를 준다. 가해자가 피해자에게 다가갈 때는 거절과 보복에 대한 공포 때문에 방어기제가 작동하기 쉽다. 마하나임은 야곱에게 심리적 안전기지를 제공하여, 그가 방어적인 태도를 버리고 진정한 사과를 할 수 있는 내면의 힘을 길러준 것이다. 나를 지지하는 거대한 존재가 있음을 확신할 때, 인간은 비로소 자신의 잘못을 인정할 만큼 강해질 수 있다. 결국 마하나임은 화해라는 거대한 파도를 넘기 전, 야곱에게 채워진 영적인 구명조끼와 같은 것이었다.

두번째 개입이 브니엘이다. 하나님이 야곱의 자아상을 바꾸어주신다. 속이는 자에서 승리자로. 그리고 환도뼈가 골절된 것은 야곱이 더 이상 자신의 힘으로 도망칠 수 없음을 의미한다. 야곱은 이제 에서 앞에 절뚝거리며 나아간다. 이 절뚝거림은 에서에게 보낼 수 있는 가장 강력한 비언어적 메시지다. “나는 이제 너를 해칠 힘도, 너로부터 도망칠 힘도 없다. 나는 전적으로 네 처분만 바란다.” 이러한 취약성의 노출은 에서의 경계심을 무너뜨리고 보복의 의지를 연민으로 바꾸는 결정적 기제가 된다. 결국 브니엘은, 나의 힘이 빠져야 진정한 화해가 시작된다는 역설을 보여준다. 야곱이 절뚝거리며 에서에게 다가갔을 때, 에서는 그 약해진 모습에서 더 이상 복수의 대상을 찾을 수 없었을 것이다. 대신 20년 전 잃어버렸던 동생의 얼굴을 발견하게 된다. 브니엘은 ‘하나님의 얼굴’이라는 뜻이다. 여기서 야곱은 죽음의 공포를 이겨내는 정서적 전이를 경험한다. 당시 사람들은 하나님의 얼굴을 보면 죽는다고 생각했다. 하지만 야곱은 하나님의 얼굴을 보고도 살았다. 여기서 얻은 확신은 에서를 대면할 용기로 이어진다. 야곱은 에서를 만났을 때 이렇게 고백한다. “내가 형님의 얼굴을 본즉 하나님의 얼굴을 본 것 같사오며...” (창 33:10). 이는 아첨이 아니다. 실제로 하나님은 그 시간에 에서의 마음안에서 일하고 계셨으며, 야곱은 브니엘에서 하나님의 용납의 얼굴을 보았기에, 에서의 얼굴에서도 용서의 얼굴로 임재해 계신 하나님을 볼 수 있었던 것이다.

야곱은 이제 하나님의 은혜를 힘입어서 가해자로서 피해자에게 해야 할 보상의 의무를 성실히 이행한다. 에서 앞에 일곱번을 엎드려 절하며 에서를 “나의 주”라고 부른다. 야곱이 훔친 것은 장자의 권리다. 그 권리 안에는 “네가 형제들의 주가 되고 네 어머니의 아들들이 네게 굴복”할 것이라는 축복이 담겨져 있다. 야곱은 지금 자신이 훔친 것을 고스란히 에서에게 되돌려주고 있는 의식을 치르는 것이다. 그리고 세 떼의 가축을 선물로 주면서 그것을 “복(베레카)”이라고 표현했다. 형에게 훔친 복을 되돌려주고 있는 것이다.

이제 하나님이 하신 일과 인간이 치루어야 할 보상의 의례가 다 끝났다. 자신의 허물을 정면으로 마주하는 야곱의 용기와 그 발걸음을 인도하시는 하나님의 은혜가 만나는 지점에서 비로소 화해가 이루어진 것이다. 분노는 긍휼로 바뀌고, 복수심은 용서로 바뀌었다. 거절은 용납이 되고 두려움은 안도감이 되었으며 거짓은 진심이 되었다. 숙제는 해결되었다. 그 영혼의 자유함 가운데 야곱은 “엘엘로헤이스라엘(나의 하나님, 이스라엘의 하나님)”이라고 고백한다.

이제 우리 차례다. 갈보리 언덕 십자가 위에서 예수 그리스도께서 마하나임과 브니엘의 모든 은혜를 이미 이루셨다. 그리고 우리가 진심으로 화해하기를 원하는 모든 에서들의 마음에서도 용서의 얼굴로 임재하셔서 일을 하고 계신다. 그리고 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “그러므로 예물을 제단에 드리려다가 거기서 네 형제에게 원망들을 만한 일이 있는 것이 생각나거든 예물을 제단 앞에 두고 먼저 가서 형제와 화목하고 그 후에 와서 예물을 드리라”(마태복음 5:23-24절). 수많은 예배 중에 한 번의 예배를 위해서도 화해가 우선되어야 한다면, 우리가 영원의 예배로 들어가기 전에는 기필코 우리들의 에서와 화해를 이루어내고 그 예배의 장으로 이동해야하지 않겠는가. 숙제를 다 마친 사람만이 누릴 수 있는 홀가분한 영혼의 자유함을 위해서 말이다.

For the freedom of the soul that only those who have finished their homework can enjoy (Genesis 33:1-20)

In life, there is homework that one must not leave without solving. As a person lives, it is impossible to keep every human relationship perfectly clean or to live with every knot neatly tied. Even if it is somewhat awkward and uncomfortable, just accepting it as it is and moving on might be good for mental health. However, there are specific relationships that one cannot help but deeply regret before dying if they are neglected or ignored. Especially if it is a relationship damaged by the fact that you yourself caused a wound, it must be resolved before the opportunity is lost.

Humans have an instinct to finish their lives as one completed story. In psychology, this is called ‘Ego Integrity.’ An incident where I caused a wound remains as an unresolved conflict in that story. The fact that one must turn the last page of life and close the book without being able to erase a large smudge in the middle remains as mental agony. If I depart first or the other person departs first without resolving the conflict, that wound inevitably becomes the final memory for the person left behind. Being remembered forever as a person who caused a wound can become an irreversible sense of despair. Also, the fact that the other person is now deprived of even the chance to receive an apology leads to painful self-reproach. Forgiveness is a gift given by the other person, but the right to request that gift is valid only while alive. According to the records of psychologist Bronnie Ware, many terminal patients say, “If only I had reached out first back then, my heart would not be as heavy as it is now.” Departing without being forgiven is the pain of being weighed down by a weight like traveling the road of eternity while carrying a heavy load.

For Jacob, the relationship with Esau was a heavy load. Returning to his hometown after 20 years, a new life must be lived, but if the relationship with Esau is not resolved before that, a new life cannot start. And if Jacob had lived as he was without reconciling with Esau, he would not have escaped from self-reproach as a ‘scammer who deceived his brother’ in his old age. He could not avoid the life-risking confrontation to complete his life story with ‘reconciliation’ rather than ending it with ‘deception.’ However, for Jacob, there would be no relationship as hard and difficult as the relationship with Esau. People generally have empathy and tend to understand and embrace others’ wounds and pain, but a strong instinct to look away from pain for which they themselves provided the cause operates particularly. This is because it is painful to face one’s own sins and flaws head-on. Therefore, in many cases, the restoration of a relationship is difficult without God’s sovereign intervention. Achieving a complete restoration of a relationship solely through human will and effort, entirely without God’s grace, might perhaps be impossible.

Now, God helps the reconciliation of Jacob and Esau very multidimensionally. The first intervention is “Mahanaim.” Jacob is placed before the threat of Esau and a 400-man army. The messengers of God met at this time give Jacob a powerful message that he is not alone and that an invisible heavenly army is protecting him. When a perpetrator approaches a victim, a defense mechanism is likely to operate due to fear of rejection and retaliation. Mahanaim provided a psychological safety base for Jacob, fostering the inner strength to discard a defensive attitude and give a sincere apology. When certain of the existence of a huge being supporting oneself, a human can finally become strong enough to admit one’s faults. Eventually, Mahanaim was like a spiritual life jacket filled for Jacob before crossing the huge wave of reconciliation.

The second intervention is “Peniel.” God changes Jacob’s self-image. From a deceiver to a victor. And the fact that the hip bone was fractured means that Jacob can no longer run away with his own strength. Jacob now goes forward limping before Esau. This limping is the most powerful non-verbal message that can be sent to Esau: “I now have no power to harm you, nor power to run away from you. I solely desire your disposal.” This exposure of vulnerability becomes a decisive mechanism that breaks down Esau’s alertness and changes his will for retaliation into compassion. Eventually, Peniel shows the paradox that true reconciliation begins only when my power is gone. When Jacob approached Esau limping, Esau would no longer be able to find an object of revenge in that weakened appearance. Instead, he discovers the face of the brother lost 20 years ago. Peniel means ‘the face of God.’ Here, Jacob experiences a psychological transition overcoming the fear of death. At that time, people thought they would die if they saw the face of God. However, Jacob lived even after seeing the face of God. The conviction gained here leads to the courage to confront Esau. When Jacob met Esau, he confessed like this: “For to see your face is like seeing the face of God...” (Gen 33:10). This is not flattery. Actually, God was working within Esau’s heart at that time, and because Jacob saw the face of God’s acceptance at Peniel, he could see God present as a face of forgiveness even in Esau’s face.

Jacob now faithfully fulfills the duty of compensation he must do as a perpetrator to the victim, relying on God’s grace. He bows down to the ground seven times before Esau and calls Esau “my lord.” What Jacob stole was the birthright. Within that right, a blessing is contained that said, “Be lord over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.” Jacob is now performing a ritual of returning what he stole in its entirety to Esau. And while giving three droves of livestock as a gift, he expressed it as “blessing (Berakah).” He was returning the blessing stolen from his brother.

Now, the work God did and the ritual of compensation the human had to perform are all finished. Reconciliation was finally achieved at the point where Jacob’s courage to face his flaws head-on meets God’s grace guiding those footsteps. Anger turned into compassion, and revenge turned into forgiveness. Rejection became acceptance, and fear became relief, while falsehood became sincerity. The homework was solved. In that freedom of the soul, Jacob confesses, “El Elohe Israel (My God, the God of Israel).”

Now it is our turn. On the cross of Calvary Hill, Jesus Christ has already achieved all the grace of Mahanaim and Peniel. And He is working even in the hearts of all the ‘Esaus’ we truly want to reconcile with, being present with a face of forgiveness. And He said this: “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift” (Matthew 5:23-24). If reconciliation must be prioritized even for one worship among numerous worships, shouldn’t we surely achieve reconciliation with our ‘Esaus’ and move to that place of worship before we enter into eternal worship? For the sake of that light-hearted freedom of the soul that only those who have finished their homework can enjoy.

야곱의 생애에서 가장 외롭고 초라할 때 하나님이 나타나신다. 형과 아버지를 속이고 도망치다가 홀로 들판에서 돌베개를 베고 잠을 자고 있을 때 꿈에 하나님이 등장하시는데, 야곱이 예배를 드리고 있거나 뭔가 믿음의 행위를 할 때가 아니라, 부끄럽고 초라하고 바닥을 치고 있을 때 나타나신다는 점에서 타이밍이 묘하다. 하나님께서 태중에서부터 야곱을 선택했지만, 지금까지 야곱의 삶에서 선택받을 만한 자질이나 행위는 없었다. 오히려 교활하고 거짓된 성품만 부각되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 하나님께서 야곱에게 나타나서 복과 약속을 주시는 장면이 우리에게는 복음이다. 하나님의 택하심은 하나님의 일방적인 은혜다. 논리나 당위나 자격이나 이유를 따질 수가 없다. 만약 우리가 믿음을 가지게 되었다면, 그런 믿음을 가지게 해 주신 하나님께 감사할 일이지, 우리의 의지나 행위의 결과가 아님을 고백하게 된다. 야곱은 이스라엘로 이름이 바뀌고, 지금 영적인 의미에서의 이스라엘은 이란과 전쟁하고 있는 그 이스라엘이 아니라, 바로 예수 그리스도를 믿는 믿음으로 인해 하나님의 자녀가 된 성도들이다. 하여 야곱에게 주신 약속은 그대로 우리에게 적용된다.

하나님의 약속은 크게 두 가지다. 첫째는 동행의 약속이다. “내가 너와 함께 있겠다” 이 동행의 약속에는 “너를 지켜주겠다”는 보호의 약속과 더불어 앞길을 이끌어주시겠다는 인도의 약속이 포함되어 있다. 이 약속은 마태복음 28장 20절의 예수님의 약속과 정확하게 일치하기에, 이 약속이 우리에게 주어진 것이라는 사실은 확실하다. 둘째는 땅과 후손을 주신다는 기업과 복에 대한 약속이다. 아브라함에게 주신 약속이 어김없이 이어지고 있는 것이다. 이 약속에는 조건이 붙어 있지 않다. 조건이 없다는 말은 이 약속의 성취를 좌우할 만한 다른 변수가 없다는 말이다. 차질 없이 일방적으로 하나님이 이루어 주실 약속이다.

야곱은 하늘이 열리고 하나님이 직접 임재하시는 놀라운 경험을 통하여 경외심을 느끼면서도 사고의 한계에 갇혀서 두 가지 오해를 넘어서지 못한다. 이 오해들은 오늘 우리에게도 영향을 미치고 있는데, 첫 번째 오해는, 하나님의 임재를 지정된 장소에 한정한다는 점이다. “주님께서 분명히 이곳에 계시는데도 내가 미처 그것을 몰랐구나. 이 얼마나 두려운 곳인가! 이곳은 다름 아닌 하나님의 집이다. 여기가 바로 하늘로 들어가는 문이다”(창세기 28:16,17절). 이 고백과 함께 베고 자던 돌을 세워 기둥으로 삼고 그곳 이름을 벧엘(하나님의 집)이라고 부른다. 하나님을 만났던 경험을 기억하고자 그곳에 돌을 세우고 이름을 짓는 일은 당연하다. 그런데 자칫 오해하면 하나님이 그곳에만 임재하는 것으로 착각하고, 오직 그곳에서만 하늘 문이 있어서 열리고 닫히고 한다고 생각할 수 있는 것이다. 하나님이 야곱에게 하신 약속은, “내가 너와 함께 있어서 네가 어디로 가든지 너를 지켜 주며 , 내가 너를 떠나지 않겠다”(15절)는 것이다. 하나님의 임재는 사람과 함께 하는 것이지 장소와 함께 하는 것이 아니다.

예전 젊은 시절 강원도 단강의 시골마을에서 한동안 목회하셨던 한희철 목사님의 글에 이런 에피소드가 소개되어 있다. 대부분의 목사님들이 다녀오는 성지순례 한 번 못 가본 아들이 안타까워서 모친이 이렇게 말한다. “우리 한 목사도 성지순례 한 번 다녀와야 할 텐데…”. 한 목사님의 대답이 이랬다. “어머니, 내가 선 곳이 성지지요”. 2,000년 전에 예수님이 살고 사역하셨던 흔적 때문에 이스라엘이 성지라면, 지금 살아계신 예수님이 내 안에 임재하시고 나와 동행하시니, 내가 두 발로 딛고 선 이곳이야말로 흔적만의 성지가 아니라 실제하는 성지가 아니겠는가 이런 뜻으로 하신 말이었다. 지금, 여기가 벧엘이다. 과연 그렇지 아니한가.

야곱의 두 번째 오해는, 그의 서원에서 엿보인다. 과연 하나님께서 약속하신 대로 다 해 주시면, 하나님은 나의 하나님이 될 것이고, 이곳이 하나님의 집이 될 것이고, 내가 십일조를 드리겠습니다, 이런 서원이다. 야곱은 서원으로 하나님의 약속에 도장을 찍고 싶어 했다. 하지만 하나님의 약속은 우리 서원 여부에 귀속되지 않는다. 일방적이고 무조건적이고 완전한 약속이다. 하나님은 조건 없는 약속을 주셨는데 야곱은 약속에 조건을 결합하는 어리석은 시도를 한다. 하나님의 은혜에 대한 인간 이해의 한계를 보여준다고 해야 할 것이다. 기독교 신앙에서 조건처럼 드려지는 예배와 헌신은 없다. 하나님의 은혜에 대한 감사의 예배와 감사에 기초한 자발적이고 자원해서 드리는 헌신 외에 다른 모든 형태의 예배와 헌신은 오해 아니면 가짜다.

여러 가지 면에서 야곱은 몹시 인간적이어서 정이 간다. 그의 욕심도, 그의 오해도, 그의 한계도, 그의 시련과 슬픔도, 그리고 그의 사랑과 믿음도. 보고 배워야 할 것도 많은 사람이지만, 그것보다 반면교사의 교훈을 더 많이 주는, 인간적인, 참으로 인간적인 사람이다. 그리고 그런 야곱에게 약속을 주시고 동행해 주시는 하나님은 정녕 하나님이시고, 참으로 하나님이시다.

Now, Here is Bethel (Genesis 28: 10-22)

God appears to Jacob at the loneliest and most pathetic point in his life. Fleeing after deceiving his brother and father, he is alone in the wilderness, sleeping with a stone for a pillow, when God appears to him in a dream. The timing is notable because God appears not when Jacob is worshiping or performing some act of faith, but when he is ashamed, pathetic, and at rock bottom. Although God chose Jacob from the womb, Jacob’s life thus far had demonstrated no qualities or actions worthy of that selection. Instead, only his cunning and deceitful nature were highlighted. Nevertheless, the scene where God appears to Jacob and gives him blessings and promises is the Gospel to us. God’s choosing is God’s unilateral grace. Logic, justification, qualification, or reason cannot be debated. If we have come to possess faith, we confess that this is a reason to thank God who gave us that faith, and not the result of our own will or actions. Jacob’s name is changed to Israel, and the spiritual meaning of Israel today is not the Israel currently at war with Iran, but the saints who have become children of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Therefore, the promises given to Jacob apply directly to us.

God’s promises are largely two-fold. First is the promise of companionship: “I will be with you”. This promise of companionship includes the promise of protection, “I will keep you safe,” as well as the promise of guidance, that God will lead the way ahead. This promise is precisely the same as the promise of Jesus in Matthew 28:20, making it certain that this promise is given to us. Second is the promise of an inheritance and blessings, giving him land and descendants. The promise given to Abraham is being carried on without fail. No condition is attached to this promise. The lack of a condition means there is no other variable that can affect the fulfillment of this promise. It is a promise that God will fulfill unilaterally, without any hindrance.

Through the marvelous experience of the heavens opening and God’s direct presence, Jacob feels reverence yet remains trapped by the limitations of his thinking, unable to overcome two misunderstandings. These misunderstandings influence us today as well. The first misunderstanding is confining God’s presence to a designated place. “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it. How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven” (Genesis 28:16-17). Along with this confession, he sets up the stone he had slept on as a pillar and calls the place Bethel (House of God). It is natural to set up a stone and name the place to remember the experience of meeting God. However, one might mistakenly believe that God is present only in that place, and that the gate of heaven opens and closes only there. The promise God made to Jacob was, “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will not leave you” (verse 15). God’s presence is with a person, not with a location.

An episode from the writings of Pastor Han Heechul, who pastored for a time in the rural village of Dangang, Gangwon-do, during his younger years, is introduced here. His mother, feeling sorry that her son had never been on a pilgrimage that most pastors take, said, “Our Pastor Han should go on a pilgrimage once, too…”. Pastor Han’s reply was this: “Mother, the place where I stand is the Holy Land”. His meaning was that if Israel is considered the Holy Land because of the traces of Jesus who lived and ministered there 2,000 years ago, then since the living Jesus is present within him and walks with him, the place where he stands is not merely a Holy Land of traces, but a real, actual Holy Land. Now, here is Bethel. Is that not true?

Jacob’s second misunderstanding is evident in his vow. His vow was essentially this: if God indeed does everything He promised, then God will be his God, this place will be the House of God, and he will give a tithe. Jacob wished to seal God’s promise with his own vow. However, God’s promise is not subject to whether or not we make a vow. It is a unilateral, unconditional, and complete promise. God gave an unconditional promise, but Jacob attempts the foolish act of coupling the promise with a condition. This should be seen as demonstrating the limit of human understanding concerning God’s grace. In the Christian faith, there is no worship or dedication offered as a condition. Any form of worship or dedication other than that based on gratitude for God’s grace, and offered voluntarily and willingly out of that gratitude, is either a misunderstanding or a counterfeit.

In many respects, Jacob is deeply human, which makes him endearing. This includes his greed, his misunderstandings, his limitations, his trials and sorrows, and his love and faith. He is a person from whom there is much to learn, but even more to gain as an example of what not to do—a human, truly human, person. And the God who gives promises to such a Jacob and walks alongside him is truly God, and genuinely God.

리브가의 뱃속에서부터 에서와 야곱은 다투었다. 리브가가 그것 때문에 견딜 수 없이 힘들어 했다. 그랬다면 실제 뱃속에서 떨어질 공간도 없이 딱 붙어 있어 10개월 간이나 투쟁해야 하는 에서와 야곱은 얼마나 힘들었겠는가. 이보다 더 심한 고문은 없었을 것이다. 그리고 태중에서부터 이런 극심한 스트레스를 받고 태어난 에서와 야곱이라면 그 인격형성에 엄청난 부정적 영향이 있었을 것이다.

형이 동생을 섬길 것이라는 신탁을 받는다. 쌍둥이 가운데 먼저 나오는 아이는 자궁에 가까운 쪽에 자리한 아이다. 임신 중에 아이들의 자리가 바뀌는 경우도 있고, 먼저 생긴 아이가 먼저 나온다는 법칙은 없다. 아무튼 태중에서는 누가 형인지 동생인지 개념이 없다. 그런데 형이 동생을 섬길 것이라는 신탁을 받는다면, 물론 아이들이 그런 내용을 알 수는 없었겠지만(복중에서 서로 다투었다는 말은 이미 경쟁이 시작되었다는 의미로 해석될 수도 있겠다. 그렇다면 과연 신탁을 몰랐을까 하고 의문해 볼 수도 있을 법하다), 서로 늦게 나오려고 애썼을 것 아니겠나. 아이들이 신탁을 알았거나 몰랐거나, 태중에서 받은 신탁 때문에 운명이 결정된다면, 한 인간의 긴 일생 가운데 작동할 꿈과 의지와 노력, 희생과 헌신, 이런 개념들이 다 의미없어지는 것 아닌가.

야곱은 에서의 발꿈치를 잡고 나온다. 태어나면서부터 경쟁적이었다는 말일 것이다. 하나님의 신탁이 인생을 결정한다고 하면, 이런 태생적 노력 역시 의미가 없어야 하지 않겠는가.

에서는 사냥꾼이 되었고 야곱은 집돌이가 되었다. 이삭은 에서를 더 사랑했고 리브가는 야곱을 더 사랑했다. 쌍둥이라도 기질이 서로 다른 것은 자연스럽다. 그리고 기질에 따라서 자식들에 대한 부모의 편애도 어쩔 수 없을 것이다. 어느 집에나 있을 수 있는 자연스러운 현상이다. 그런데 하나님의 신탁이 있었다는 사실을 감안한다면 자연스럽지 않을 수도 있다. 그 신탁 때문에 리브가는 야곱이 더 사랑스러웠을 수 있고, 그 신탁 때문에 이삭은 에서가 더 애틋했을 수도 있었을 것이다.

에서는 성급하고 단순했고 야곱은 치밀하고 교활했다. 한 집에 사는 식구들이 음식을 만들면 당연히 같이 나누어 먹었을 것인데 배고픈 에서에게 장자권을 받고 팥죽을 팔다. 에서는 아마 장난처럼 생각했을 것이다. 말로 준다고 해서 없어질 장자권이 아니라고 생각했을 테니까. 이게 장난이 아니고 야곱의 의도였다면, 야곱은 참으로 교활한 사람이다. 그런데 이때 에서나 야곱이 하나님의 신탁에 대해 알고 있었을까? 에서는 모르겠지만, 야곱은 그랬던 것 같다. 하나님이 자기에게 합법적으로 주신 몫이라고 생각했기에 하나님의 계획에 자신의 공로도 살짝 더하려고 했던 것 같다.

히브리서에서는 에서의 행동을 망령된 짓이라고 정죄했다. 그리고 이 거래 때문에 장자의 축복을 놓쳤다고 해설한다(히브리서 12: 16-17). 이런 논리가 가능하려면, 태중에 있을 때의 신탁은 의미가 없어진다. 그리고 리브가와 야곱이 합작하여 아버지를 속인 일도 의미가 없어져야 한다. 과연 야곱의 축복은 태중에서의 신탁 때문인가, 팥죽 때문인가, 야곱과 리브가가 합작한 속임수 때문인가. 아니면 이 세 가지 모두가 복합적으로 작동한 결과물인가, 대답이 쉽지 않다. 그리고 그 대답이 무엇이든 우릴 불편하게 만든다.

나중에 이삭이 에서를 축복하려고 했다가 속아서 야곱을 축복한다. 축복한 사람의 마음에서 그 축복을 받을 사람은 에서였다. 그런데 손이 야곱의 머리에 올려져 있었다는 사실 때문에 그 축복이 야곱에게 간다면, 축복의 흐름이, 마음이 아닌 물리적 자세에 따라 결정된다는 뜻인데 동의하기 쉽지 않다. 만약 그렇다면 마음에 없는 말로 손만 얹고 축복해도 축복이 임할 수 있다고 해석될 수도 있지 않겠는가. 또 하나 동의가 어려운 사실은, 속아서 축복한 것을 알았다면 다시 에서에게 손을 얹고 축복하면 되지 않았겠는가. 축복을 한 사람이, 먼저 한 축복을 취소하고 진심으로 다시 복을 빌면 그 복이 에서에게 가야 하는 것 아닌가. 복이, 버튼에 의해 발사대를 떠난 미사일처럼, 축복한 사람의 의도와 상관없이 혼자 독자적으로 작동하는 기계적 현상은 아니지 않은가. 이삭의 축복이, 에서가 팥죽 때문에 장자권을 판 행위에 종속되는 것처럼 해석한 히브리서의 기록은 아무래도 설득력이 떨어진다.

논리의 허점들을 다 배제하고, 불편한 질문들을 믿음이란 이름으로 꾹꾹 눌러버리고, 단순화시킨 히브리서의 교훈은, 하나님 나라의 유업을 가볍게 여기지 말고, 세상의 팥죽 한 그릇과 바꾸지말라는 것이다. 세상에는 많은 종류의 팥죽이 존재한다. 선명한 색깔이 있고, 모락모락 김이 나고, 허기와 욕구를 자극하는 매력이 있다. 만약 그 옆에 하나님 나라의 유업이, 그렇게 볼 수 있고, 만질 수 있고, 맛볼 수 있는 형태로 놓여 있어서, 팥죽과 비교할 수 있다면 아무도 팥죽을 택하진 않을 것이다. 그런데 하나님 나라의 유업은 장자권과 같이 형태가 없다. 그래서 많은 사람들이 에서처럼 팥죽을 택한다. 이미 많은 사람들이 팥죽을 먹어버렸다. 먹어버렸을 뿐만 아니라 만들기도 한다. 지금도 팥죽을 만들고 먹으면서 살아간다. 그리고 그때마다 장자권을 잃듯이 하나님의 나라를 잃어버린다면, 도무지 우리는 누구이며, 어디 있으며, 어디를 향해 가고 있는가?

세상은 야곱처럼 교활하여 끊임없이 맛있는 팥죽을 끓여낸다. 배고픈 사람이 팥죽 한 그릇 먹는 것이 그렇게 큰 죄인가 되뇌이면서 우리는 오늘도 팥죽을 먹는다. 팥죽을 먹고 교회를 간다. 팥죽을 먹고 예배를 드린다. 팥죽을 먹고 기도한다. 그 많은 팥죽을 만들고 소비하는 우리들은 에서인가 야곱인가?

An Uncomfortable Reflection on Red Bean Stew (Genesis 25:19-34)

Esau and Jacob contended in Rebekah’s womb. Rebekah found it unbearable and difficult because of this. If so, how much harder must it have been for Esau and Jacob, who had to struggle for ten months, stuck together without any space to separate in the actual womb? There could have been no worse torture than this. And for Esau and Jacob, born having endured such extreme stress from the womb, there must have been an enormous negative impact on their character formation.

Rebekah receives an oracle that the older shall serve the younger. The first child to come out among twins is the one who is situated closer to the cervix. There are cases where the children’s positions change during pregnancy, and there is no rule that the first conceived child comes out first. In any case, there is no concept of who is the elder and who is the younger in the womb. However, if they received an oracle that the older shall serve the younger, even though the children couldn’t possibly have known the contents (the phrase ‘contended in the womb’ could be interpreted to mean that the competition had already begun. If so, one might wonder if they did know the oracle), wouldn’t they have tried to come out later? Whether the children knew the oracle or not, if their destiny is determined by the oracle received in the womb, do concepts like a person’s dreams, will, efforts, sacrifice, and dedication, which operate throughout a long human life, all become meaningless?

Jacob comes out holding Esau’s heel. This suggests they were competitive from birth. If God’s oracle determines life, shouldn’t this kind of innate effort also be meaningless?

Esau became a hunter, and Jacob became a homebody. Isaac loved Esau more, and Rebekah loved Jacob more. It is natural for even twins to have different temperaments. And the parents’ favoritism toward their children based on their temperaments may be unavoidable. This is a natural phenomenon that can happen in any family. However, considering the fact that there was God’s oracle, it might not be natural. Because of that oracle, Rebekah might have found Jacob more lovable, and because of that oracle, Isaac might have felt more attached to Esau.

Esau was impatient and simple, while Jacob was meticulous and cunning. When family members living in the same house cooked, they naturally would have shared the food, but Jacob sold the birthright to a hungry Esau in exchange for the red bean stew. Esau probably thought of it as a joke. He would have thought that a birthright given verbally wouldn’t disappear. If this wasn’t a joke but Jacob’s intention, then Jacob is a truly cunning person. But did Esau or Jacob know about God’s oracle at that time? Esau might not have, but Jacob seems to have. He seems to have thought it was his legitimate share given by God, and so he tried to add his own merit to God’s plan.

The book of Hebrews condemns Esau’s action as profane. And it explains that he lost the blessing of the firstborn because of this transaction (Hebrews 12:16-17). For this logic to be possible, the oracle received in the womb becomes meaningless. Also, the collaboration between Rebekah and Jacob to deceive the father must become meaningless. Was Jacob’s blessing due to the oracle in the womb, the red bean stew, or the deception concocted by Jacob and Rebekah? Or is it the complex result of all three operating together? The answer is not easy. And whatever the answer, it makes us uncomfortable.

Later, Isaac intended to bless Esau but was deceived and blessed Jacob. In the heart of the person giving the blessing, the one who was supposed to receive it was Esau. However, if the blessing went to Jacob because the hand was laid upon Jacob’s head, it would mean that the flow of the blessing is determined by the physical posture, not the intention, which is hard to agree with. If that were the case, couldn’t it be interpreted that a blessing can be bestowed just by laying hands, even with words that are not heartfelt? Another fact that is difficult to agree with is, if Isaac realized he was deceived, couldn’t he have simply laid his hand on Esau again and blessed him? If the person who gave the blessing were to retract the first blessing and sincerely bless again, shouldn’t that blessing go to Esau? A blessing is not a mechanical phenomenon, like a missile launched from the pad by a button, operating independently regardless of the blesser’s intention, is it? The account in Hebrews, which interprets Isaac’s blessing as being subordinate to Esau’s act of selling his birthright for a bowl of red bean stew, seems to lack persuasiveness.

Excluding all logical loopholes and suppressing the uncomfortable questions in the name of faith, the simplified lesson of Hebrews is: do not treat the inheritance of the Kingdom of God lightly, and do not exchange it for a bowl of the world’s red bean stew. Many types of red bean stew exist in the world. They have vivid colors, steam wafts up, and they have an appeal that stimulates hunger and desire. If the inheritance of the Kingdom of God were placed next to it in a visible, tangible, and tasteable form, so that it could be compared with the red bean stew, no one would choose the red bean stew. But the inheritance of the Kingdom of God, like the birthright, is formless. That is why many people, like Esau, choose the red bean stew. Many people have already eaten the red bean stew. Not only have they eaten it, but they also make it. They live by making and eating red bean stew even now. And if, each time, we lose the Kingdom of God just as Esau lost his birthright, who are we, where are we, and where are we headed?

The world, cunning like Jacob, constantly boils delicious red bean stew. While repeating the question, ‘Is it such a great sin for a hungry person to eat a bowl of red bean stew?’ we eat the red bean stew today as well. We eat the red bean stew and go to church. We eat the red bean stew and worship. We eat the red bean stew and pray. Are we, who make and consume so much red bean stew, Esau or Jacob?

오래 전 일이다. 미국에서 공부를 마치고 돌아가던 학우가 샌프란시스코 주변을 차로 한 바퀴 돌면서 드라이브를 시켜줄 수 있느냐고 부탁했다. 흔쾌히 수락했고, 함께 드라이브 하는 동안 그 학우는 익숙한 곳을 지날 때마다 작별 인사를 했다. “바이~ 베이 브릿지”, “바이 골든게이트 브릿지”, 이런 식으로 말이다. 그러면서 덧붙였다. “적절하게 작별하지 않으면 미련이 남을 것 같아서요”. 외국 여행이 요즘처럼 쉽고 흔치 않을 때였다. 한국으로 돌아가면 언제 다시 이곳을 방문할 수 있을지 기약이 없으니까 조금이라도 아쉬움을 떨쳐버리고 싶었던가 보다. 그 학우의 작별의례를 지켜보면서 나름 현명하고 의미있는 일이라고 느꼈었다.

익숙한 것과 결별하는 데는 각기 다른 방법이 있는 것 같다. 적절한 작별의 의식을 거치면서, 미련을 떨쳐내고 잘 정돈된 작별을 하는 것이 필요할 때가 있다. 적절한 작별의례 없이 치러지는 작별은 오랫동안 회한이나 미련으로 남을 수도 있을 것이기 때문이다. 반면에 즉각적이고 단호한 작별을 해야 할 경우도 있을 것이다. 어차피 떠나야 한다면 좌고우면 할 것 없이 빨리 떠나는 것이 상책일 수 있는 것이다. 괜히 미적거리다가 떠나야 할 때 떠나지 못하면 구차해지거나 발목을 잡혀 인생이 휘청거릴 수도 있을 것이니까 말이다. 어차피 인생에서 작별이란 경험을 피할 수는 없을 것이고, 만남이 하나님의 축복이듯 작별도 축복으로 남게 하려면, 적절한 방식으로 작별을 치루는 지혜는 매우 필요하다고 본다.

리브가의 작별은 너무나 급작스러웠다. 결혼에 대해 아무 생각이 없던 아가씨가, 단 하룻밤 사이에 얼굴도 보지 못한 사내와 결혼하기로 하고, 익숙한 가족을 떠나 먼 길을 간다. 딸을 먼 곳으로 시집보내는 어머니가 열흘 정도라도 같이 있다가 떠났으면 좋겠다고 붙잡는 것은 당연한 것 아니겠는가. 딸 역시도 언제 다시 볼 수 있을지, 혹은 영영 못 볼지도 모를 부모와 고향을 떠나면서 적절한 작별의례를 가지는 것이 마땅하지 않겠는가. 그런데 리브가에게는 그런 의례가 없었다.

물론 하나님의 인도하심도 명확했고, 아브라함의 신실한 종이 재촉하기는 했지만, 리브가가 좀 더 주체적인 여성이었다면 떠남의 시간은 자기가 주권적으로 결정할 수 있지 않았을까. 스스로가 결정의 주체로서 적절한 이별의 과정을 거치고 떠났으면 좋지 않았을까. 아브라함의 종이 속히 돌아가서 미션을 완수하고 주인을 기쁘게 해주려는 충정은 이해가 되지만, 지금 상황은 종의 입장보다는 리브가의 입장이 훨씬 더 배려를 받아야 할 상황이 아니던가. 팔려가는 결혼도 아닌데, 자기 의견 한 마디도 내지 못하고 바로 다음날 떠나야 한다면, 미련뿐만 아니라 자존심에 상처가 생길 수도 있을 터였다.

아무튼 리브가는 적절한 작별의례 없이 곧장 떠났다. 그리고 그녀의 생애를 추적해보면 리브가는 한 번도 제대로 된 작별을 못한다. 고향으로 돌아가지도 못했고, 부모와 혈육과의 재회도 없었다. 두 아들, 에서와 야곱 사이에 속임수로 끼어 들어서 에서의 축복을 훔쳐 편애하는 야곱에게 주고나서, 그 집착과 편애로 인해 모든 것들과 급작스러운 작별을 하게 된다. 야곱을 살리고자 급히 도망보내면서 제대로 된 작별도 못했고, 두 번 다시 그렇게 편애했던 아들의 얼굴을 보지도 못했다. 에서와의 관계에서는 물리적 작별보다 훨씬 더 지독한 단절의 고통을 겪었으리라. 야곱을 도망시키면서, “어찌 하루에 너희 둘을 잃으랴” 했던 말대로 되어 버린 것이다(창세기 27: 45).

더 지독한 비극이 행간에 숨겨져 있다. 성경에는 사라의 죽음과 아브라함의 애도가 기록되어 있다. 라헬의 죽음과 야곱의 애도도 기록이 되어 있다. 심지어 리브가의 유모 드보라의 죽음도 기록이 되어 있고 그 죽음의 장소를 “알론바굿(통곡의 상수리 나무)”라 부르며 애도한 기록이 있다(창세기 35:8). 그런데 리브가의 죽음은 기록되지 않았다. 설명은 없지만 짐작은 할 수 있다. 아무도 애도하지 않았기 때문일 것이다. 만약 리브가가 이삭보다 먼저 죽었다면 이삭이 그녀의 죽음을 애도하지 않았다는 의미일 것이고, 이삭보다 늦게 죽었다면 에서가 그녀의 죽음을 애도하지 않았다는 말이다. 야곱은 리브가의 죽음을 알지 못했거나 알았더라도 형편상 그럴 수 없었을 것이라 짐작할 뿐이다. 이것은 매우 이례적인 일이 아닐 수 없다. 리브가라는 인물의 중요성에 비추어 보아서도 그렇고, 또 이삭은 다른 족장들과 달리, 리브가 외에는 다른 첩을 둔 적이 없었으며, 이삭의 일생에 여인은 오직 리브가 한 명 뿐이었다는 사실을 감안하면 더욱 그렇다. 아무튼 리브가는 마지막 작별까지도 아무런 의례 없이 치루었다. 화려하게 피어났으나 아무도 보지 않는 사이에 혼자 툭 떨어져 버린 꽃처럼 그렇게.

작별(作別)은 ‘헤어짐을 만든다’는 뜻이다. 무엇이든 만드는 일에는 지혜와 정성, 그리고 과정이 필요할진데, 적절한 작별의례가 작별도 축복으로 만드는 지혜가 아닐까. 제대로 작별하는 법을 알지 못했기에 분명 외로웠을 여인 리브가를 생각하다가 떠오른 생각 한 조각이다.

The Woman Who Never Said a Proper Goodbye (Genesis 24:50-67)

It was a long time ago. A classmate, who was returning home after finishing her studies in the US, asked if I could drive her around San Francisco. I readily agreed. As we drove, she bid farewell to every familiar place we passed. “Bye, Bay Bridge,” “Bye, Golden Gate Bridge,” she would say. She added, “If I don’t say a proper goodbye, I think I’ll be left with lingering regrets.” Back then, foreign travel was not as easy or common as it is now. She probably wanted to shake off her disappointment, knowing there was no guarantee when she might visit the area again after returning to Korea. Observing her ritual of farewell, I felt it was a wise and meaningful thing to do.

It seems there are different ways to part with the familiar. Sometimes, it is necessary to go through an appropriate ritual of farewell, casting off regrets and making a well-ordered goodbye. A farewell performed without a proper ceremony can remain as regret or a lingering feeling for a long time. Conversely, there are times when an immediate and decisive farewell is necessary. If one must leave anyway, it might be best to depart quickly without hesitation. If you stall needlessly and fail to leave when you should, you might become pathetic, get entangled, and your life could falter. Since the experience of saying goodbye is inevitable in life, and just as meeting is a blessing from God, making farewells a blessing requires the wisdom to carry them out in an appropriate manner.

Rebekah’s farewell was too sudden. A girl who had no thoughts of marriage agrees to marry a stranger overnight and leaves her familiar family for a long journey. Isn’t it natural for a mother, sending her daughter far away, to want to keep her for at least ten more days? And for the daughter, leaving her parents and hometown—whom she might never see again—wouldn’t it be proper for her to have an adequate farewell ritual? Yet, Rebekah had no such ceremony.

Though God’s guidance was clear and Abraham’s faithful servant was pressing her, if Rebekah had been a more autonomous woman, couldn’t she have sovereignly decided the time of her departure? Wouldn’t it have been better if she, as the subject of the decision, had gone through an appropriate farewell process before leaving? While the servant’s loyalty—to return quickly, complete his mission, and please his master—is understandable, wasn’t Rebekah’s situation one that required far more consideration than the servant’s perspective? This wasn’t a marriage where she was being sold, so if she had to leave the very next day without expressing a single opinion, she would have been left not only with regret but also a wounded pride.

In any case, Rebekah left immediately without a proper farewell ritual. And if we trace her life, Rebekah never says a proper goodbye. She never returned to her hometown, nor did she ever reunite with her parents or kin. When she interfered with deceit between her two sons, Esau and Jacob, stealing Esau’s blessing and giving it to her favored son, Jacob, this obsession and favoritism led to a sudden separation from everything. When she hastily sent Jacob away to save his life, she couldn’t say a proper goodbye, and she never saw the face of her favored son again. In her relationship with Esau, she must have suffered the bitter pain of a break far more devastating than a physical parting. As she sent Jacob away, her words—“Why should I lose both of you in one day?”—came true (Genesis 27:45, NIV).

A more bitter tragedy is hidden between the lines. The Bible records the death of Sarah and Abraham’s mourning. The death of Rachel and Jacob’s mourning is also recorded. Even the death of Rebekah’s nurse, Deborah, is recorded, and the place of her burial was called Allon Bakuth (Oak of Weeping), mourning her loss (Genesis 35:8, NIV). However, Rebekah’s death is not recorded. There is no explanation, but we can surmise. It is likely because no one mourned her. If Rebekah died before Isaac, it would mean Isaac did not mourn her death; if she died after Isaac, it means Esau did not mourn her death. We can only presume that Jacob did not know of Rebekah’s death or, even if he did, circumstances prevented him from mourning. This is quite an unusual omission. It is striking considering Rebekah’s importance, and especially since Isaac, unlike other patriarchs, never took another wife besides Rebekah, meaning she was the only woman in his entire life. In any case, Rebekah faced even her final farewell without any ceremony.

The Korean word Jakbyeol (作別) means ‘to create a parting.’ Creating anything requires wisdom, sincerity, and a process. I infer through Rebekah, the woman who was lonely because she did not know how to say a proper goodbye, that perhaps an appropriate farewell ritual is the wisdom that turns even parting into a blessing.

아브라함이 이삭을 바친 장면은 감동적이면서도 불편한 본문이다. 하나님이 이런 식으로 인간의 믿음을 시험하신다는 것 자체가 불편하다. 그런 시험없이도 그냥 신뢰해주시면 그 신뢰가 더욱 빛날 것이 아닌가? 더군다나 시험의 내용이 아들을 제물로 바치라는 비인격적인 시험이라는 것이 또한 불편하다. 하나님이 마치 이방의 신들처럼 유치해 보이는 여지가 있지 않은가.

그럼에도 불구하고 순종하는 아브라함의 믿음은 돋보인다. 하나님이 “아브라함아” 하고 부르셨고 아브라함이 “예, 여기 있습니다” 하고 대답했다. 하나님이 부를 때 아브라함은 알아듣고 대답했다. 이게 하나님과 아브라함의 관계였다. 그렇게 아브라함을 불러놓고 말씀하셨기 때문에 아브라함이 그 말씀의 내용을 잘못 들었을 가능성은 없다. 그런데 그 내용이 영 개운치 않다. 하나님의 말씀은 한 마디 한 마디가 의도적으로 아브라함의 심장을 후벼파는 말이다. “너의 아들”, “네가 사랑하는 외아들” “그를 번제물로 바쳐라”. 분명 이 명령은 아브라함이 경험한 하나님과 어긋난다. 그런데 어떻게 아브라함은 순종할 수 있었을까? 하나님의 말씀 이전에 하나님에 대한 인격적 신뢰가 아브라함에게 있었던 것으로 짐작된다. 이해할 수 없는 말씀이지만 그 안에도 하나님의 어떤 뜻이 있을 것이란 신뢰와 믿음이 있었을 것이다. 그런가 하면, 아브라함은 이삭을 통해서 큰 민족을 이루게 하실 것이라는 약속을 이미 받았다. 그러므로 이삭은 그렇게 없어질 존재는 아닐 것이란 믿음이 있었다. 아마 두 가지 가능성을 믿었던 것 같다. 첫째는 혹시라도 이삭을 번제물로 바치더라도 하나님이 다시 살려내실 것이라는 믿음이 있었던 것 같다. 5절에서 아브라함이 종들에게 한 말에서 이 믿음이 엿보인다. “내가 이 아이와 저리로 가서 예배를 드리고 너희에게로 함께 돌아올 터이니”라고 했다. 이삭과 같이 돌아온다는 말이었다. 히브리서 11장은 이렇게 해석했다. “아브라함은 시험을 받을 때에 믿음으로 이삭을 드렸으니 그는 약속들을 받은 자로되 그 외아들을 드렸느니라. 그에게 이미 말씀하시기를 네 자손이라 칭할 자는 이삭으로 말미암으리라 하셨으니 그가 하나님이 능히 이삭을 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살리실 줄 생각한지라 비유컨대 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 도로 받은 것이니라”(17-19절).

두 번째는 하나님이 이삭 대신 어떤 대속제물을 예비해 주실 것이란 믿음이 있었던 것 같다. 이삭이 “불과 장작은 여기에 있습니다만은 번제로 바칠 어린 양은 어디에 있습니까?”라고 질문했을 때 아브라함이 대답한 말에 그 근거가 있다. “얘야, 번제로 바칠 어린 양은 하나님이 손수 마련하여 주실 것이다”(8절).

아브라함의 믿음이 돋보이는 반면, 이삭의 믿음도 엿보인다. 아브라함이 이삭을 묶어서 제단 장작 위에 올려놓을 때까지 이삭은 아무 말도 하지 않고 순종한다. 일이 돌아가는 모양이 가만히 있어야 할 상황이 아니지 않은가. 일반적으로 자식이 부모에게 순종한다는 개념으로는 이해가 되지 않는다. 당시 이삭의 나이는 여러 가지로 추정이 된다. 다음 장에서 사라가 127세로 죽는 장면이 나오는데, 많은 주석가들은 사라의 죽음이 이삭을 제물로 바치려고 했다는 사실을 알고 그 충격으로 죽은 것이 아닐까 생각한다. 만약 그렇다면 당시 이삭의 나이는 37세가 된다. 유대인 역사가 요세푸스는 이삭이 당시 25세라고 추정했다. 모리아산을 오를 때 이삭이 나무를 지고 아브라함이 불과 칼을 들었다. 아마 이삭이 아브라함보다 힘이 더 세었기 때문에 더 무거운 짐을 졌을 것이다. 그렇다면 건강한 청년 이삭이 늙은 아버지가 제단에 묶어놓고 죽이려고 하는데 가만히 있었다는 것은 이삭 또한 이 일에 대한 하나님의 간섭을 믿는 믿음이 있었다고 추정된다. 말하자면 아브라함의 믿음과 이삭의 믿음이 만나서 같이 일하고 있는 장면인 것이다.

결정적 순간에 하나님이 대속물을 준비해 주신다. 아브라함이 고개를 돌려서 살펴보니 수풀 속에 숫양 한 마리가 있었다. 본다는 말과 준비한다는 말이 히브리어로 같은 단어, “라아”다. 여호와 이레의 “이레”는 “라아”의 미래형이다. 그렇다면 이런 문장이 성립될 수 있을 것이다. “믿음은 하나님이 준비해 주시는 것을 볼 수 있는 눈이다” 이 말을 더 확장시키면, “믿음은 나의 구원을 위해서 하나님이 준비해주신 대속제물인 예수 그리스도를 볼 수 있는 눈이다” 라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 그렇다. 믿음이 있으면 하나님의 준비가 보인다. 아브라함이 대속의 양을 보듯이 예수 그리스도가 보일 것이다. 믿음이 없으면 이게 안 보인다. 그래서 내가 전부 다 준비해 나가야 한다. 자신의 구원을 자신이 준비한다는 것은 불가능한 미션이고 따라서 피곤한 인생이 될 수밖에 없다. 나의 구원을 위해서 하나님이 예수 그리스도를 대속제물로 준비해 주신 것이 보이는 사람은 인생의 구비구비마다 “여호와 이레”의 하나님이 나를 위해 준비해주신 은혜들을 볼 수 있을 것이다. 부디 우리 눈이 열려 하나님이 준비해 주신 것들을 믿음으로 누릴 수 있게 되기를 축복한다. 아멘.

The Eye That Sees What God Has Prepared (Genesis 22: 1-18)

The scene where Abraham offered Isaac is a moving yet uncomfortable passage. The very fact that God tests human faith in this way is uncomfortable. If He would just trust us without such a test, wouldn’t that trust shine even brighter? Moreover, the content of the test—to offer his son as a sacrifice—being an impersonal test is also uncomfortable. Is there not a possibility that God appears childish, like the gods of the gentiles?

Nevertheless, Abraham’s obedient faith stands out. God called, “Abraham,” and Abraham replied, “Yes, here I am.” When God called, Abraham understood and answered. This was the relationship between God and Abraham. Because God called Abraham and spoke to him in that way, there is no possibility that Abraham misunderstood the content of the message. But that content is not at all refreshing. Every single word of God’s message is a word that intentionally digs into Abraham’s heart. “Your son,” “Your only son whom you love,” “Offer him as a burnt offering.” Clearly, this command contradicts the God whom Abraham had experienced. But how was Abraham able to obey? It is speculated that Abraham had a personal trust in God that preceded God’s command. Though it was a word he could not understand, there must have been a trust and belief that some will of God lay within it. On the other hand, Abraham had already received the promise that God would make him into a great nation through Isaac. Therefore, he had the faith that Isaac would not be a person who would vanish just like that. He probably believed in two possibilities. First, it seems he had the faith that even if he offered Isaac as a burnt offering, God would resurrect him again. This faith can be seen in the words Abraham spoke to his servants in verse 5. He said, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” It was a word that meant they would return with Isaac. Hebrews 11 interpreted it this way. “By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only son, of whom it was said, ‘Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.’ He considered that God was able to raise him even from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back” (17-19).

Secondly, it seems he had the faith that God would prepare some substitutional sacrifice instead of Isaac. The basis for this lies in the words Abraham answered when Isaac asked, “The fire and wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son” (8).

While Abraham’s faith stands out, Isaac’s faith can also be seen. Isaac obeys without saying a word until Abraham binds him and lays him on the wood of the altar. The way things were going, wasn’t it a situation where he should not have stayed still? It cannot be understood by the general concept of a child obeying a parent. Isaac’s age at the time is estimated in various ways. In the next chapter, a scene where Sarah dies at 127 appears, and many commentators think that Sarah’s death might have been caused by the shock of knowing that Isaac was about to be offered as a sacrifice. If that is the case, Isaac’s age at the time would be 37. The Jewish historian Josephus estimated Isaac to be 25 years old at the time. When climbing Mount Moriah, Isaac carried the wood, and Abraham carried the fire and the knife. Isaac probably carried the heavier load because he was stronger than Abraham. If so, the fact that Isaac, a healthy young man, stayed still while his aged father bound him on the altar to kill him suggests that Isaac also had a faith that believed in God’s intervention in this matter. In other words, it is a scene where Abraham’s faith and Isaac’s faith met and were working together.

At the decisive moment, God prepares the substitutional sacrifice. Abraham turned his head to look around and saw a ram in the thicket. The words “to see” and “to prepare” are the same word in Hebrew, “ra’ah.” The “Yireh” of “Yahweh Yireh” is the future tense of “ra’ah.” If so, this sentence can be established. “Faith is the eye that can see what God prepares.” If we expand this word further, we can say, “Faith is the eye that can see Jesus Christ, the substitutional sacrifice that God prepared for my salvation.” That is right. If there is faith, God’s preparation is visible. Just as Abraham saw the ram of atonement, Jesus Christ will be visible. If there is no faith, this is not visible. Therefore, I have to prepare everything myself. For a person to prepare their own salvation is an impossible mission and therefore they are bound to have a tiresome life. The person who sees that God prepared Jesus Christ as the substitutional sacrifice for my salvation will be able to see the graces that the God of “Yahweh Yireh” prepared for them at every turn of life. I sincerely bless that our eyes may be opened so that we can enjoy the things God has prepared, by faith. Amen.

끝까지 하는 사랑이 끝까지 나를 따라올 때 (요한복음 13:1,18-30)

“유월절 전에 예수께서는, 자기가 이 세상을 떠나서 아버지께로 가야 할 때가 된 것을 아시고, 세상에 있는 자기의 사람들을 사랑하시되, 끝까지 사랑하셨다”(요한복음 13: 1)

예수님과 제자들의 마지막 식사에 대한 장면을 많은 화가들이 화폭에 남겼다. 그 가운데 가장 유명한 작품은 다빈치의 “최후의 만찬”이다. 이 그림에서 다빈치는 예수님을 중심으로 제자들을 좌우에 일렬로 배치했는데, 이 구도에는 많은 의도가 담겨 있다. 다빈치는 예수님이 “너희 중 한 사람이 나를 팔리라”고 말씀하신 직후, 제자들이 보인 찰나의 심리적 동요를 한눈에 보여주고 싶었던 것 같다. 그리고 당시에는 혁신적이었던 원근법을 완벽하게 구현해서 찬장의 격자, 벽면의 태피스트리, 식탁의 선들이 모두 예수님의 머리를 소실점으로 모이게 설계했던 것이다. 그러나 이것은 어디까지나 화가의 미술적 장치일 뿐, 당시의 문화와 풍습을 고려했을 때, 그리고 성경에 언급된 장면들을 고려했을 때, 이런 구도는 사실적이 아니다.

이제 실제로 만찬이 있었던 그 방과 그 식탁으로 가보자. 식탁은 트리클리니움이라고 불리는 ㄷ자 형태의 낮은 상이었을 것이다. 참석자들은 바닥을 왼팔로 지탱하고 비스듬히 기대 반쯤 누운 자세를 하고 오른손으로 음식을 먹었다. 그래서 요한의 경우 예수님의 오른쪽에 앉았기 때문에 마치 예수님의 품에 안긴 듯한 모양새가 된 것이다. 그렇다면 예수님의 왼쪽에는 누가 예수님을 안은 듯한 모습으로 앉았을까? 가롯 유다가 가장 유력한 인물이다. 그는 예수님이 떡 조각을 찍어 건네줄 수 있는 자리에 있었다(요한복음 13:26). 그리고 “내가 이 떡 조각을 적셔서 주는 사람이 바로 그 사람이다”라고 말씀하셨을 때, 그 말을 들은 사람은 요한과 유다밖에 없었다고 생각된다. 만약 다른 제자들이 이 말을 들었다면 유다가 무사히 그 방에서 나갈 수가 없었을 테니까. 제자들은 그 다음 말만 들었을 것이다. “네가 할 일을 어서 하여라” 그래서 유다가 방을 나갈 때도 예수님의 심부름을 하러 가는 줄로 여겼던 것이다. 겉으로 보이는 식탁의 분위기는 매우 따뜻하고 아늑하다. 약간 어둡지만 부드러웠을 촛불. 갓 구운 빵 냄새. 고급지진 않더라고 익숙하고 정겨운 와인의 향기. 서로 품에 안긴 듯한 자세가 만들어주는 친밀감. 그리고 그들은 방금 주님이 발을 씻어주셔서 아주 개운하고 만족한 느낌으로 만찬을 즐길 수 있었을 것이다.

겉으로 느껴지는 아늑함과 달리 유다의 마음은 요동치고 있었을 것이다. 요한복음 13:2절에 의하면, 저녁 먹을 때에 마귀가 이미 시몬 가룟의 아들 유다의 마음속에 예수를 팔아 넘길 생각을 불어넣었다고 했다. 그러고 나서 예수님이 떡 조각을 적셔서 주는 사람이 바로 자기를 팔아넘길 사람이라고 말씀하심과 동시에 떡 조각을 찍어 유다에게 주었다. 위에서 말한 대로 그 말은 요한과 유다만 들었다. 그리고 예수님이 떡 조각을 유다에게 건넸다. 유다가 “떡 조각을 받자, 사탄이 그에게 들어갔다”(27절)고 한다. 정리해 보면, 예수님은 유다의 마음을 알고 계셨다. 그러면서도 그의 발을 씻겼고, 그를 자신의 왼편에 앉혀서 마치 자신을 유다에게 맡기는 듯한 자세를 취하셨다. 그리고 구체적인 말씀으로 경고를 보내셨다. 유다의 입장에서는 배반의 마음을 먹긴 했지만 돌이킬 기회가 거듭해서 주어지고 있었던 셈이다. 발을 씻으실 때도 너희 모두가 다 깨끗한 것은 아니라는 말씀으로 유다만 알아들을 수 있게 언질을 주셨고, 예수님을 품에 안은 모습으로 식탁에 앉힌 것도 유다에게 주신 기회였다. 또다시 유다와 요한만 들을 수 있는 목소리로 배반을 경고하신 것도 기회였다. 그리고 마지막으로 떡 조각을 건넸다. 돌이킴의 기회는 여기까지였다. 만약 유다가 떡 조각을 받지 않았다면 어떻게 되었을까 궁금해진다. 유다의 배신은 성경에 기록된 예언의 성취로 간주되고 있기에, 그렇지 않았다면 이란 가정 자체가 무색하지만, 어쨌든 예수님이 유다에게 거듭거듭 돌이킴의 기회를 제공하고 있는 것은 사실이다. 유다는 떡 조각을 받아드는 것이 뭘 의미하는지를 알고 있었지만 그렇게 마음을 굳힌 것이다. 유다의 마음 안에서 벌어진 싸움에서 사탄이 최종적으로 승리한 것이다. 그것을 성경은 “사탄이 그에게 들어갔다”고 표현했다. 유다가 나가자, “때는 밤이었다”고 성경은 슬프게 탄식한다. 끝까지 사랑하셨던 그 사랑이 끝끝내 거부당한 슬프고 아픈 배반의 밤이었다.

차가웠을 유다의 밤이 어느 날 문득 우리의 방문 밖에도 펼쳐질지 모를 일이다. 우리가 어떤 나쁜 마음을 먹었다고 해서 다 나쁜 결과로 이어지는 것은 아니다. 끝까지 우리를 사랑하면서 끝까지 따라오는 사랑이 있기에 돌이킴의 기회는 항상 있다. 그렇다고 기회가 영원히 계속되는 것은 아니다. 만약 당신이 어떤 심각하고 최종적인 결정을 앞두고 있다면, 한 번만 더 생각해 보자. 한 번만 더 나를 뒤쫓아 끝까지 따라오는 이 사랑을 생각해 보자. 내 발을 씻기시는 그분의 손길을 느껴보자. 내 품에 전해지는 그분의 체온을 느껴보자. 내 손에 들려진 떡 조각에 담긴 그분의 마음을 조금만 더 생각해 보자. 이 사랑이 베풀고 있는 배려와 기회들을 생각해 보자. 그 사랑이 아무리 어두운 밤도 물리칠 유일한 빛일 테니까 말이다. 유다가 실패했다고 해서 우리도 실패해야 하는 것은 아니니까 말이다.

Loved to the End, Pursued to the Last (John 13:1, 18-30)

“It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.” (John 13:1, NIV)

Many artists have captured the scene of Jesus and his disciples’ last meal on canvas. Among them, the most famous work is Da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’. In this painting, Da Vinci depicted the disciples seated in a single row with Jesus at the center—a composition steeped in profound intentionality. It seems he wished to capture, in a single glance, the fleeting psychological turmoil of the disciples immediately after Jesus declared, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” He perfectly implemented the perspective that was revolutionary for its time, designing the coffers of the ceiling, the tapestries on the walls, and the lines of the table to converge at a vanishing point right at the head of Jesus. Yet, this remains a purely artistic device; when considering the culture and customs of the time, as well as the scenes described in the Bible, such a structure is far from realistic.

Let us now step into that actual room and toward that very table where the supper took place. The table would have been a low, U-shaped arrangement known as a triclinium. Guests would support themselves on their left arms, reclining at an angle, and eat with their right hands. Thus, in the case of John, sitting to the right of Jesus, he would have appeared as if leaning back against Jesus’ chest. Then, who sat to the left of Jesus, leaning in as if being embraced by Him? Judas Iscariot is the most likely figure. He was in a position where Jesus could dip a piece of bread and hand it directly to him (John 13:26). And when Jesus said, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish,” it is believed that only John and Judas heard those words. Had the other disciples heard them, Judas might not have left that room alive. They likely only heard the words that followed: “What you are about to do, do quickly.” So, even as Judas left the room, they assumed he was going on an errand for Jesus. On the surface, the atmosphere of the table was remarkably warm and cozy. The candlelight—perhaps dim, yet soft. The scent of freshly baked bread. The aroma of wine, perhaps not exquisite, but familiar and inviting. The intimacy created by the posture of leaning into one another. Having just had their feet washed by the Lord, they must have been enjoying the meal with a sense of profound refreshment and contentment.

Despite the outward coziness, Judas’s heart must have been in upheaval. According to John 13:2, “The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.” Then, just as Jesus identified the betrayer as the one to whom He would give the dipped bread, He handed the morsel to Judas. As mentioned, only John and Judas heard the identification. Jesus handed the bread to Judas. “As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him” (v. 27). To put it simply, Jesus knew what was in Judas’s heart. Nevertheless, He washed his feet, seated him at His left hand—placing Himself, in a sense, in Judas’s care—and sent him warnings through specific words. From Judas’s perspective, though he had harbored betrayal in his heart, he was being given opportunity after opportunity to turn back. When washing the feet, Jesus gave a hint only Judas could understand by saying not all of them were clean; seating him at the table in such a way that he was embraced by Jesus was another chance. Warning of the betrayal in a voice only Judas and John could hear was yet another chance. And finally, He handed him the bread. This was the final threshold of the opportunity to return. One cannot help but wonder: what if Judas had not taken the bread? Since Judas’s betrayal is regarded as the fulfillment of biblical prophecy, the premise of “what if” may be moot, but it remains a fact that Jesus repeatedly offered him the chance to turn back. Judas knew exactly what receiving that bread meant, yet he hardened his heart. In the battle waged within his heart, Satan claimed the final victory. The Bible describes this as: “Satan entered into him.” As Judas left, the Scripture breathes a sorrowful sigh: “And it was night.” It was a night of bitter betrayal, where the love that loved to the end was ultimately rejected.

That same cold night that claimed Judas may one day unfold outside our own doors. Just because we harbor an ill intent does not mean it must inevitably lead to a tragic end. Because there is a love that loves us to the end—a love that follows us to the very end—there is always a chance to turn back. Yet, those opportunities do not last forever. If you find yourself facing a grave and final decision, think just one more time. Think once more of this love that chases after you, following you to the end. Feel the touch of His hands as He washes your feet. Feel the warmth of His body pressed against your chest. Linger just a moment longer in the warmth of the love held within the piece of bread in your hand. Reflect on the grace and the chances this love is extending to you. For that love will be the only light capable of dispelling even the darkest night. Just because Judas failed does not mean we must fail as well.

요한복음 12:1-11, 기적이 끝난 후의 일상

알랭 드 보통의『낭만적 연애와 그 후의 일상(THE COURSE OF LOVE)』이란 책에 이런 내용이 있다. 사람들은 사랑이 어떻게 시작되는지에 대해서는 지나칠 정도로 잘 알지만, 그 사랑을 어떻게 지속시킬 수 있는지에 대해서는 무모하리만치 무지하다. 다들 사랑의 시작을 사랑의 전부라고 착각한다. 모든 동화들은 사랑에 빠지게 되는 과정을 길게 설명하고 나서, 그리고 그들은 오래오래 행복하게 살았다, 하고 맺는다. 이건 동화일뿐 현실은 아니다. 이런 사랑은 없다. 이런 인생도 없다. 사랑이 시작되고 우여곡절 끝에 결혼하게 되고, 그것이 다가 아니다. 결혼 후 겪게 되는 난관들, 잦은 돈 문제, 자녀 출산, 배우자의 외도, 권태, 때로는 서로를 향한 살의, 그리고 때로는 스스로를 죽이고 싶은 충동. 바로 이러한 모든 것들 가운데 하루하루 살아가는 것이 진정한 러브스토리이다. 그렇지 않은가. 그렇다면 신앙생활은 어떤가? 예수님을 만나고, 은혜를 체험하고, 죄사함의 감격을 누리고, 기적을 맛보고, 뜨겁게 헌신하고, 그리고 그 다음에는?

성경에 나오는 인물들 중 예수님께서 가장 친밀감을 가지고 가까이 지냈던 가족은 나사로의 가족이다. 나사로, 마르다, 그리고 마리아. 이 세 남매의 삶을 보면 신앙의 전체 여정이 어떠해야 하는지 그림이 그려지는 것 같다. 가장 극적인 기적은 나사로가 경험한다. 나흘간 죽어있다가 살았다. 그리고 이 사건은 예수님의 가장 중요한 계시, 곧 부활이요 생명되시는 예수님을 드러내는 창문과 같은 역할을 한다. 실제로 나사로 까닭에 예수님을 믿는 사람들이 많이 생겼다(12:11). 성경은 여기서 나사로의 이야기를 끝내지만 어쨌든 나사로는 이후에도 계속 살아갔을 것이다. 그렇다면 나사로는 어떻게 살았을까?

성경은 침묵하지만 사람들은 궁금했나 보다. 동방교회의 전승에 따르면 나사로는 유대 지도자들의 박해를 피해 키프로스(Cyprus) 섬의 키티온(Kition, 현재의 라르나카)으로 도피했다고 한다. 그곳에서 사도 바울과 바나바를 만나 키티온의 초대 주교로 임명되었고, 약 30년을 더 살다가 서기 63년경 자연사하였다고 한다. 현재 라르나카에는 그의 무덤 위에 세워진 ‘성 나사로 교회’가 있다. 나사로는 다시 살아난 이후로 한 번도 웃지를 않았단다. 나흘간 겪었던 죽음에 대한 끔찍한 기억 때문에 그랬을 것이라고 한다. 단 한 번, 어떤 도둑이 항아리를 훔치는 것을 보고, “흙이 흙을 훔치는구나”하고 쓴웃음 한 번 지은 것이 다란다. 정말 그랬다면 나사로의 30년은 너무 진지함 일변도였던 것 같은데, 그나마 다행인 것은 그래도 이 정도면 그가 경험했던 기적을 흠집 내지는 않았으니까 말이다. 기적이 때로 위험한 것은, 놀라운 기적을 경험했던 사람이 넘어지면, 그 사람만 실족하는 것이 아니라 많은 사람을 실족하게 하는 것 때문인데, 설령 나사로에게 그런 일이 있었다고 하더라도 교회가 그런 전승을 남기지는 않았을 테니까 알 수는 없는 일이다.

마리아의 삶은 아름답고 찬란하다. 예수님의 발밑에서 말씀을 사모하는 마리아의 모습은 수많은 고전주의 화가들의 상상력을 자극해서 그림의 단골 소재로 쓰였는데, 마리아와 마르다가 화폭에 같이 등장할 때 대부분의 화가들은 마리아의 모습에 더 많이 초점을 맞추고 있다. 예수님께서 마리아가 더 좋은 쪽을 택했다고 말씀하셨기 때문일 것이다. 오늘 본문에서도 마리아는 삼백 데나리온 값어치의 향유를 아낌없이 예수님의 발에 붓고 머리털로 그 발을 닦았다. “온 집안에 향유 냄새가 가득 찼다”고 성경은 그 장면을 묘사한다. 최소한 삼만 불 이상의 헌금을 한꺼번에 드리는 마리아의 예배는 영광스럽다. 하지만 정황상 경제공동체로 짐작되는 세 남매의 삶에서 돌발적인 마리아의 헌신은 다른 두 사람, 특히 가장 역할을 했던 마르다에게는 오랫동안 감내해야하는 아픔과 부담일 수도 있었을 것이다.

신앙생활에서 기적도 영광스럽고, 한 순간의 헌신도 영광스럽다. 그러나 그것보다 더 중요한 것은 그 이후의 일상이다. 모든 사람은 어쩔 수 없이 하루하루를 따박따박 살아가야 한다. 그 하루하루가 모두 찬란한 기적일 수도 없고, 영광스러운 헌신일 수도 없다. 오히려 그냥 버텨 내는 날들이 대부분일 수 있을 것이다. 그런 날들은 어쩔 수 없이 마르다처럼 살아내야 한다. 죽었다 살아나는 기적도 없고, 삼백 데나리온의 향유를 붓는 헌신이 없어도, 마르다는 매일을 믿음으로 살아간다. 마르다의 평범한 일상이 진정한 신앙생활이라고 말할 수도 있을 것이다. 당신의 삶에 나사로의 기적같은 선물이 있기를 축복한다. 마리아의 향유와 같은 찬란한 헌신이 있기를 축복한다. 그리고 오늘, 마르다처럼 평범한 일상을 믿음으로 살아내는 당신의 하루를 응원한다.

John 12:1-11, So, What Happened to Lazarus Afterward?

In Alain de Botton’s book The Course of Love, there is a passage that resonates deeply: people often know excessively well how love begins, but are recklessly ignorant of how to sustain it. Everyone mistakes the beginning of love for the entirety of love. Fairy tales always end with “And they lived happily ever after” after a long explanation of how they fell in love. But that is only a fairy tale, not reality. Such love does not exist, nor does such a life. The trials and tribulations leading to marriage are not the end. The challenges that follow—financial struggles, child-rearing, infidelity, boredom, occasional resentment, and even the impulse to give up—living through all these things day by day is the true story of love. Is it not?

What about our faith? We meet Jesus, experience grace, feel the thrill of forgiveness, witness miracles, and devote ourselves passionately. But then what? Among the figures in the Bible, the family Jesus was most intimate with was that of Lazarus, Martha, and Mary. Looking at these three siblings, one can see a complete picture of what the journey of faith should look like. Lazarus experienced the most dramatic miracle: he was raised after being dead for four days. This event serves as a window revealing Jesus’ most vital revelation—that He is the Resurrection and the Life. Indeed, many believed in Jesus because of Lazarus (12:11). The Bible ends Lazarus’ story there, but he surely continued to live his life. How did he live? We hope he lived a faithful life until the end, but if he hadn’t, what impact would that have had on those who believed because of him?

While the Bible is silent, people must have been curious. In place of Scripture, church tradition tells us of Lazarus’ later years. While Eastern and Western traditions differ, the Eastern tradition is often considered more credible: Lazarus fled the persecution of Jewish leaders to Kition (modern-day Larnaca) on the island of Cyprus. There, he met the Apostles Paul and Barnabas, was appointed the first Bishop of Kition, and lived for about 30 more years before passing away naturally around 63 AD. Today, the Church of Saint Lazarus stands over his tomb in Larnaca. Interestingly, it is said that after being raised from the dead, Lazarus never laughed again. Tradition suggests this was due to the harrowing memories of the four days he spent in the afterlife. It is said he smiled only once—a bitter smile—when he saw a thief stealing a clay jar, remarking, “Clay is stealing clay.” If this were true, his 30 years might seem overly somber, but at least he did not tarnish the miracle he had experienced. Testimony can be dangerous because when someone who has shared a miraculous experience falls, they cause many others to stumble as well.

Mary’s life is beautiful and radiant. Her posture—sitting at Jesus’ feet, longing for His word—has captured the imagination of countless classical painters. When Mary and Martha appear together on canvas, most artists focus on Mary. This is likely because Jesus said Mary had chosen “the better part.” In today’s passage, Mary pours an expensive jar of perfume, worth three hundred denarii, onto Jesus’ feet and wipes them with her hair. The Bible describes the scene, saying, “the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” Her worship, offering a sum equivalent to tens of thousands of dollars at once, is truly glorious. Yet, in the lives of the three siblings who were presumably an economic community, Mary’s sudden devotion could have been a long-endured pain and burden for the other two, especially for Martha, who served as the head of the household.

In the life of faith, miracles are glorious, and moments of total devotion are glorious. However, what is even more important is the life that follows. Every person must live through each day, step by step. Not every day can be a brilliant miracle or a moment of glorious devotion. Rather, most days are likely spent simply enduring. On those days, we must live like Martha. Even without the miracle of rising from the dead or the devotion of pouring out three hundred denarii worth of perfume, Martha lived her daily life in faith. One could say that Martha’s ordinary daily life is the truest form of the life of faith. I pray that your life may be graced with Lazarus-like miracles and Mary-like radiant devotion. But today, I applaud your faith as you simply live through your ordinary daily life.

모든 기적은 기적 자체만의 가치가 있는 것이 아니다. 그 기적이 나타내고자 하는 메시지가 진짜 의미고 가치다. 나사로를 살린 사건도 그렇다. 죽은 사람이 살아나는 것은 대단한 기적이지만 진짜 메시지가 따로 있다. “나는 부활이요 생명이니, 나를 믿는 사람은 죽어도 살고, 살아서 나를 믿는 사람은 영원히 죽지 아니할 것이다”(11:25-26). 이것이 진짜 메시지다.

이 말씀은 언뜻 듣기에 논리적인 모순이 있는 것처럼 들린다. 예수님을 믿는 사람은 죽어도 산다고 했다. 그런데 살아서 나를 믿는 사람은 영원히 죽지 않는다고 했다. 그럼 궁극적으로 죽는 사람이 없어야 하는 것 아닌가. 죽어서 믿는 사람은 없을 터인데 살아서 나를 믿는 사람이란 표현은 또 뭔가? 예수님은 죽음의 두 가지 의미를 설명하고 계신 것이다. 믿는 사람은 육체적으로 죽어도 부활로 다시 산다. 나사로가 다시 살아난 것이 그 본보기다. 그리고 현재 나를 믿는 사람은 비록 육체적으로 죽는다고 하더라도 그것이 단순히 육체의 소멸일 뿐 영적인 생명은 여전히 계속되는 것이다.

그렇다면 예수 그리스도께서 부활이고 생명임을 믿는 사람들은 이미 영원한 생명, 즉 영생이라는 영광스러운 과정 안으로 들어간 것인데, 그 영원한 생명을 누리는 것이 어떤 상태여야 하는지를 예수님은 나사로의 예를 통해 보여주신다.

예수님은 나사로를 살리기 전에 이틀을 의도적으로 지체하시면서 새로운 계시를 열어 주셨다. 이전까지 예수님에 대한 믿음은 병고치시는 예수님이셨다. 이 믿음은 날 때부터 맹인 된 사람의 눈을 뜨게 해주신 사건으로 절정에 다다랐다. 마르다도 나사로가 죽기 전에만 예수님이 오시면 죽을 병도 나을 것이라고 믿었다. 그런데 이 믿음은 무덤앞에서 멈추었다. 죽음과 함께 믿음도 멈춘 것이다. 그러나 예수님이 부활이요 생명이란 새로운 계시가 임하자 믿음은 무덤 문을 열어젖혔다. 믿음이 죽음 너머까지 확장된 것이다. 살아난 나사로가 묶인 채 나왔다. 강시처럼 두 발이 결박된 채 깡충걸음으로 뛰어나왔을 것이다. 예수님이 다시 말씀하신다. “풀어놓아 다니게 하라”. 살아난 사람은 산 사람답게 풀려나야 한다. 자유로워야 한다. 이게 예수님이 말씀하신 생명의 의미다.

살리는 것은 예수님의 몫이다. 그런데 무덤 문을 여는 것, 그리고 풀어놓아 다니게 하는 것은 사람의 몫이다. 내가 해야 할 일이고 이 일을 해내야 생명은 완성된다. 회개했으면서 여전히 묶여 있어서는 안 된다. 회개한 사람은 회개한 그 죄에 묶여 있는 자신을 풀어 놓아야 한다. 용서했으면서 여전히 묶고 있으면 안 된다. 용서하고 나서는 그 죄로부터 용서받은 사람을 풀어 줘야 한다. 그래서 그 사람이 자유롭게 다닐 수 있게 해주어야 한다. 궁극적으로 그 사람 때문에 믿는 사람이 많아져야 비로소 나사로를 살리신 예수님의 교훈이 완성되는 것이다. 그런데 아직까지 팔다리가 묶인 채 강시처럼 깡충걸음으로 다니는 사람이 여기저기 보이는 것은 웬일인가? 당신은 이미 죽어버렸다고 생각하는 관계나 꿈 같은 것들이 다시 살아날 수 있다고 믿는가? 그렇다면 부활이요 생명되신 주님 앞에 냄새나는 무덤 문을 열어 젖힐 수 있는 용기도 있기를 축복한다. 그리고 풀어놓아 다니게 하는 순종에까지 이를 수 있기를 축복한다. 그리하여 참된 부활 생명을 온전히 누리게 되길 축복한다. 부활절이 다가오고 있다.

John 11:38-46, Opening the Tomb and Untying What is Bound

Every miracle does not have value in the miracle itself alone. The message that the miracle intends to display is the true meaning and value. The event of raising Lazarus is also like that. A dead person coming back to life is a great miracle, but there is a true message. “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die” (11:25-26). This is the true message.

At first glance, these words sound as if there is a logical contradiction. It said that those who believe in Jesus will live even though they die. But it also said that those who live and believe in Him will never die. Then, ultimately, shouldn’t there be no one who dies? Since there would be no one who believes after they are already dead, what then is the expression “the one who lives and believes in me”? Jesus is explaining two meanings of death. Those who believe will live again through resurrection even if they die physically. Lazarus coming back to life is the example of that. And for those who currently believe in Him, even if they die physically, it is merely the extinction of the body, and spiritual life still continues.

If so, those who believe that Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life have already entered into the glorious process of eternal life—that is, everlasting life—and Jesus shows through the example of Lazarus what state enjoying that eternal life should be.

Jesus intentionally delayed for two days before raising Lazarus, opening a new revelation. Until then, faith in Jesus was in a Jesus who heals diseases. This faith reached its peak with the event of giving sight to the man born blind. Martha also believed that if Jesus had come only before Lazarus died, even the fatal illness would have been healed. However, this faith stopped in front of the tomb. Faith stopped along with death. But when the new revelation that Jesus is the resurrection and the life came, faith threw open the door of the tomb. Faith was expanded beyond death. The living Lazarus came out bound. He must have come out hopping like a Jiangshi with both feet bound. (The Chinese ghost known as Jiangshi moves by hopping with both feet together because its joints are too stiff to bend). Jesus speaks again. “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.” A person who has come back to life must be released like a living person. They must be free. This is the meaning of life that Jesus spoke of.

It is Jesus’ part to bring someone back to life. However, it is the human’s part to open the tomb door and let them go. This is the task I must do, and only when this is fulfilled is life made complete. One must not remain bound after repenting. A person who has repented must release themselves from the sin they repented of. One must not keep someone bound after forgiving them. After forgiving, you must set the forgiven person free from that sin so they can walk in freedom.

Ultimately, it is when many come to believe because of that person that the lesson of Jesus raising Lazarus is truly fulfilled. Yet, why do we still see people here and there hopping around like a Jiangshi with their limbs tied? Do you believe that relationships or dreams you thought were dead can live again? If so, I bless you with the courage to throw open the doors of the foul-smelling tomb before the Lord, who is the resurrection and the life. I also bless you to reach the point of obedience in letting them go, so that you may fully enjoy the true life of resurrection. Easter is approaching.

“나는 선한 목자다. 나는 내 양들을 알고, 내 양들은 나를 안다”(요한복음 10:14)

얼마 전에 잘 아는 지인이 보이스피싱 피해를 당했다. 안타까우면서도, 어떻게 그렇게 허술하게 속을 수가 있는지 어처구니가 없었다. 하지만 당사자의 입장에서 보면 그렇게 당할 수밖에 없을 정도로 사기의 구조가 치밀하고 정교했다. 이제는 인공지능의 발달로 인해 사기꾼들의 수법도 더욱 교묘해질 것이다. 음성도 영상도 다 위조해낼 수 있으니까 말이다. 세상에는 이런 보이스피싱범들뿐만 아니라 각양각색의 사기와 조작과 속임수가 난무한다. 모르는 번호가 뜨는 전화는 아예 받지 않는 것이 당연한 시대에 우리는 살고 있다. 거짓의 소리가 넘쳐나는 시대에 살고 있는 우리에게 듣고 분별하는 일, 잘 듣는 일의 중요성은 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않을 것이다.

예수님이 자신을 양의 문과 선한 목자로 소개하신다. 양의 문에는 두 가지 개념이 담긴다. 구원과 풍성한 생명이다. 문은 안과 밖을 구별한다. 문안은 보호와 안전, 그리고 구원이 있는 곳이다. 문안의 양떼들이 문밖으로 나서더라도 목자의 보호와 인도 아래서 안전하게 양질의 초장에서 꼴을 먹을 수 있다. 그 결과는 풍성한 생명이다. 반면에 문밖에는 도둑과 강도가 있다. 의도적으로 훔치고 빼앗고 파괴시키고 죽이려고 하는 세력이 있다는 말이다. 그러므로 목자의 우리에 들지 못하는 양들이 당하는 피해는 우연히 당하는 피해가 아니다. 의도적이고 조직적이고 집요하게 해치려는 세력이 있다. 그리고 그 결과는 파멸이다.

선한 목자도 두 가지의 개념으로 소개된다. 이름을 불러주는 친밀함과 목숨을 바치는 헌신이다. 목자는 양을 안다. 양도 목자를 안다. 이름을 알고 목소리를 안다. 그래서 양은 목자의 목소리를 듣고 따른다. 또한 선한 목자는 양을 위해 목숨을 버린다. 양이 목자의 이익을 위해 존재하는 것이 아니라 목자가 양을 위해 존재한다. 목숨까지 바쳐서 보호하고 돌본다. 목자와 양 사이에는 친밀함과 신뢰가 자리한다. 선한 목자의 반대편에 삯꾼이 있다. 삯꾼의 특징은 자기의 이익이 최우선이다. 양은 삯꾼의 이익을 위한 도구일 뿐이다. 삯을 받기 때문에 양을 돌보는 척하지만 이리를 만나서 위험해지면 혼자 도망친다. 삯꾼과 양은 서로 모른다. 친밀함도 신뢰도 없다.

내가 문 안의 양인지 문 밖의 양인지는 명백하다. 또한 내가 선한 목자에게 속했는지 삯꾼에게 속했는지도 백하다. 안전함, 친밀함, 풍성함, 공동체 의식, 이런 것들이 있으면 선한 목자에게 속한 것이고 문 안에 있는 것이다. 반면에 불안감, 두려움, 피해의식, 경쟁심, 빈곤, 피폐함, 이런 것들이 나를 주장하고 있으면 삯꾼에게 속했고 문 밖에 밀려나 도둑에게 노출되어 있다는 증거다.

선한 목자에게 속하고 싶다면 목자의 음성을 듣는 것부터 시작해야 한다. 목자가 양의 이름을 불러줄 때 들을 수 있어야 한다 (3절, 16절). 결국 듣는 것이 구원이다. 목자의 음성을 들으면 생명을 얻고, 잘 들으면 풍성한 생명을 얻는다. 목자의 음성이 희미해지면 어느 틈엔가 보이스피싱범의 음성 같은 것들이 비집고 들어온다. 나의 지인은 평생을 함께 살아온 배우자와 사별한 후 그 상실감을 틈타서 보이스피싱범의 음성이 들려왔다. 하지만 이제 다시 선한 목자 되신 예수 그리스도의 음성에 귀를 기울이면서 그 영혼이 소생하고 있다. 지금도 우리의 선한 목자는 친밀한 음성으로 우리의 이름을 하나하나 부르신다. 오늘 우리가 읽고 묵상하는 성경 말씀 한 구절, 한 단락에 선한 목자의 음성이 담겨져 있다. 그 음성이 들리기를 축복한다. 그 음성이 이끄는 대로 따를 수 있기를 축복한다. 그리하여 생명을 얻되 풍성한 생명을 얻게 되기를 축복한다.

John 10:1-21, Whose Voice are You Listening to?

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me” (John 10:14, NIV)

Recently, a close acquaintance of mine fell into the sophisticated trap of voice phishing and suffered greatly. Watching from the sidelines, I wondered, “How could anyone fall for such a transparent trick?” However, from the victim’s perspective, the web of deception was so intricate and ruthless that it was nearly impossible for an individual to withstand. In today’s world, where artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly advanced, the methods of scammers will only grow more cunning. We live in a “society of distrust” where voices and even videos can be forged by technology. In an era where it is common to be wary of any unfamiliar number, what we need most is a spiritual sense—the ability to discern the truth among the many voices we hear.

In the text, Jesus reveals Himself as both “the gate for the sheep” and “the good shepherd.” The “gate” represents the pathway to salvation and a life of abundance. A gate defines a boundary. Inside the gate is a place of salvation, where protection and rest are guaranteed. Even when the sheep go out through the gate, as long as they are under the shepherd’s careful guidance, they are not in a dangerous wilderness but in a lush pasture filled with quality food. Conversely, outside the gate, evil forces lurk, seeking to steal and destroy the sheep. The hardships faced by sheep who wander outside the shepherd’s fold are not coincidental; they are the result of persistent and organized attacks intended to destroy life.

The essence of the “Good Shepherd” lies in intimacy and sacrifice. The shepherd calls his sheep by name, and the sheep recognize his voice. The pinnacle of this relationship is the shepherd’s devotion in laying down his life for his sheep. The sheep are not a means to the shepherd’s profit; rather, the shepherd exists for the life of the sheep. This stands in stark contrast to the “hired hand,” whose only focus is self-interest. To him, the sheep are merely tools, and at the first sign of danger, he abandons them and flees without hesitation. Between a hired hand and the sheep, there is no personal trust.

Whether I am currently staying inside the gate is clearly revealed by examining my inner state. If peace, intimacy, an abundance of life, and a sense of community flow through my life, I am within the embrace of the Good Shepherd. However, if anxiety, fear, a victim mentality, and endless competitiveness dominate me, it is a sign that I have been misled by the voice of a hired hand and am exposed to the dangers outside the gate.

The first step to belonging to the Good Shepherd is to listen to His voice. When the Shepherd calls my name specifically, I must respond to that still, small voice (v. 3, 16). Ultimately, “listening” is the beginning of salvation. When we hear the Shepherd’s voice, we gain life, and when we are deeply immersed in that voice, we truly enjoy a life of abundance. When the Shepherd’s voice grows faint, the cunning temptations of the world squeeze in. Just as the voice of a scammer intruded upon my friend during the profound loss of a spouse, the enemy seeks our moments of weakness. Yet, my friend is now experiencing a restoration of the soul as they listen once again to the voice of Christ, our Good Shepherd. At this very moment, the Good Shepherd is calling your name. The voice of the Good Shepherd resides in each verse and every passage of the Bible that we read and meditate upon this day. I pray that His tender voice reaches your soul and that you follow it into the banquet of abundant life.

창세기 12:10-20, 어쩔 수가 없다

박찬욱 감독의 최신 영화, “어쩔 수가 없다”가 평론가들에게 좋은 평을 들었다. 이 영화의 제목은 등장 인물 모두에게 해당되는 상황논리다. 주인공 이병헌은 제지회사의 작업반장으로 근무하면서 행복한 중산층 가장으로서 꿈을 이룬 사람이다. 그러나 어느 날 갑자기 실직을 당한다. 삶의 기반이 송두리째 흔들린다. 드림 하우스도 매물로 내놓아야 했고, 딸의 음악 레슨과 부인의 댄스 레슨도 그만 두어야 했다. 기르던 개 두 마리도 떠나보냈다. 무너진 삶을 회복하기 위해서는 다시 직장을 얻어야 했고 그 과정에서 한 자리를 놓고 경쟁하는 모든 경쟁자들을 죽여 없애야 했다. 가장은 이 모든 과정이 어쩔 수 없다고 생각한다.

경쟁자 이성민도 사정은 마찬가지다. 재취업을 포기하고 편의점이나 열자고 하는 부인 염혜란의 제안을 단칼에 거절한다. 자기는 종이 기술자고 25년을 그 일만 했고, 어쩔 수 없이 그 일이 아니면 안되는 인간이라고 자신을 규정하고 재취업을 위한 경쟁을 포기하지 않는다. 이병헌의 부인 손예진도 남편의 살인을 알게되자 어쩔 수 없이 공범이 되기로 한다. 제지공장의 경영진들도 기술자들을 대거 해고하는 일을 AI의 발달로 인해 어쩔 수 없는 일이라고 생각한다. 모든 등장 인물들이 다 어쩔 수 없다는 상황논리로 자기 행위를 정당화하지만 결말은 모두가 어쩔 수가 없는 비극으로 끝난다. 영화의 마지막에 거대한 벌목 기계들이 아름드리 나무들을 잘라내는 장면을 보여준다. 사람들이 각자 아무리 제 자리를 지키고자 발버둥을 쳐도 어쩔 수 없이 벌목 기계에 의해 잘려나가는 나무 신세를 면할 수 없음을 시사한다. 이병헌은 취미가 분재 가꾸기 였는데, 분재는 자연을 인간이 자기 취향대로 조작하는 행위라고 볼 수 있다. 그렇게 인생을 자기가 마음대로 가꿀 수 있다고 생각했지만 막상 분재를 가꾸는 자신은 벌목 당하는 나무와 다름 아닌 것이다.

오늘 성경에 등장하는 인물들도 다 나름대로 어쩔 수가 없는 사람들이다. 기근이 들었으니 아브람으로서는 어쩔 수 없이 살 길을 찾아 애굽으로 가야했다. 그런데 아내가 너무 미인이다. 나라를 기울일 만큼 아름다운 여인을 경국지색이라고 한다. 아마 사래는 당나라의 양귀비나 월나라의 서시 급 미모였던 것 같다. 그런데 그때 사래의 나이가 65세였다. 믿기 힘든 동안이었던 모양이다. 아브람이 사래에게 부인이 아니라 누이라고 하자고 했다. 아브람으로서는 어쩔 수 없었다. 살아남아야 하니까. 사래는 어쩔 수 없이 동의한다. 실제로 사래는 아브람의 이복 누이였으니까. 자기 남편을 사지로 몰아넣을 수는 없었으니까. 그래서 결국 애굽왕 바로에게 65세의 팜므파탈 역할을 한다. 절대 권력을 가진 자는 욕망을 통제할 줄 모른다. 그럴 필요가 없으니까. 바로는 권력도 있었고 욕망도 있었다. 그리고 눈앞에 절세미인이 있었다. 그러니 바로로서는 어쩔 수 없는 상황인 것이다. 그래서 아브람에게 엄청난 부를 안겨주고 사래를 또 한 명의 부인으로 데려간다. 이제 하나님 차례다. 외람되지만 하나님도 어쩔 수가 없다. 아브람에게 큰 민족을 이룰 약속을 주셨다. 그 약속이 유지되고 성취되려면 사래는 당연히 보호되어야 한다. 그런데 아브람이 사래를 팔아 넘겼다. 어쩔 수 없이 하나님은 바로를 협박하신다. 정말 외람되고 송구하지만 겉으로 드러나는 이야기 구조는 마치 로맨스 스캠같다. 바로는 재물만 갈취당하고 사래와 아브람을 그대로 내보낸다. 아브람은 가나안 땅으로 되돌아오지만 이 재물이 있어서 기근도 이겨내고 거부가 된다.

그런데 창세기 20장에 가서 똑같은 이야기가 반복된다. 로맨스 스캠을 당한 상대만 바로에서 아비멜렉으로 바뀔뿐 정확하게 같은 이야기다. 그렇다면 성경의 의도는 분명하다. 하나님과 아브람 사이의 약속이 성취되는 것은 전적으로 하나님의 은혜라는 것이 강조되는 것이다. 인간은 어쩔 수없는 죄인이어서 또 어쩔 수없이 죄를 짓고 하나님과의 약속을 깨뜨리는 실수를 반복하겠지만 그럼에도 불구하고 하나님은 신실하게 약속을 지키고 성취해 나가실 것이다. 비록 로맨스 스캠의 공범과 같은 역할을 어쩔 수 없이 감당해야 하는 곤욕을 치르시더라도 하나님은 최선을 다하실 것이다.

나 또한 어쩔 수 없는 죄인이지만 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 인하여 아브람처럼 나도 하나님의 약속 안에 있다. 지금까지도 그랬지만 앞으로도 어쩔 수없는 상황은 펼쳐질 수 있을 것이다. 그러나, 그럼에도 불구하고, 하나님의 신실하심 때문에 나의 구원은 지켜질 것이다. 하나님의 약속은 어쩔 수없이 예수 그리스도의 십자가에 묶여있고, 그 어쩔 수 없는 사랑으로 인해 나는 안전할 것이다. 그러니 나는 두려워하지 않는다. 다만, 하나님의 자녀로서 바로와 아비멜렉에게 책망을 받았던 아브람처럼 세상의 책망을 받는 부끄러움을 당하지는 말아야겠다. 더군다나 하나님을 어쩔 수없는 상황으로 자꾸 몰아넣어서는 안되지 않겠는가. 그러므로 이제 더 이상 어쩔 수 없다는 상황논리로 핑계대지 말고, 모든 상황 속에서 믿음으로 살 것을 다시 한 번 다짐한다. 믿음은 어쩔 수 없는 것이 아니라 능치 못함이 없는 것이니까(마가복음 9:23). 아멘.

Genesis 12:10-20, No Other Choice

Director Park Chan-wook’s latest film, No Other Choice, has received acclaim from critics. The film’s title represents a “situational logic” that applies to every character in the story. The protagonist, played by Lee Byung-hun, is a foreman at a paper company who once achieved his dream of being a happy middle-class family man. However, his life is suddenly upended by an unexpected layoff. Forced to sell his dream house, cancel his daughter’s music lessons and his wife’s dance classes, and even part with his two pet dogs, he finds his life’s foundation shattered. To restore his broken life, he must find a new job, but in the process, he finds himself driven to eliminate all competitors vying for a single position. He justifies all these actions as being “inevitable”—that he had “no other choice”.

His rival, played by Lee Sung-min, is in a similar predicament. He flatly rejects his wife’s suggestion to give up on re-employment and open a convenience store. Defining himself as a paper technician of 25 years who simply “cannot be anything else,” he refuses to abandon the race for a job. Even the protagonist’s wife, played by Son Ye-jin, chooses to become an accomplice upon learning of her husband’s crimes, feeling it is her only choice. Even the management of the paper mill dismisses the mass layoffs as an “inevitable” outcome of AI advancement. While every character justifies their actions through this situational logic of “inevitability,” they all spiral toward a tragedy beyond their control. The film concludes with a striking scene of massive logging machines felling grand trees. This suggests that no matter how hard individuals struggle to hold their ground, they are ultimately as powerless as trees before a harvester. The protagonist’s hobby of tending to bonsai—an act of manipulating nature to one’s taste—is symbolic. He believed he could shape his life as he pleased, only to realize that he himself was nothing more than a tree being felled by the giant hand of fate.

The figures in today’s scripture are also facing their own “inevitable” circumstances. Driven by a severe famine, Abram had no choice but to head to Egypt for survival. However, his wife Sarai’s extraordinary beauty becomes a hurdle. She was a beauty that could “topple a kingdom”—comparable to legendary figures like Yang Guifei or Xi Shi. Remarkably, Sarai was 65 at the time, yet she seemingly possessed an incredible, youthful beauty. Fearing for his life, Abram asks Sarai to call herself his sister rather than his wife. For Abram, it was an “inevitable” choice for survival. Sarai, unable to lead her husband to his death, agrees—notably, she was indeed his half-sister. Thus, she unintentionally plays the role of a 65-year-old femme fatale before Pharaoh. Those with absolute power often do not know how to restrain their desires because they have no need to. Pharaoh had both the power and the desire, and a peerless beauty stood before him; for him, it was a situational inevitability. Consequently, he showers Abram with immense wealth and takes Sarai as another wife. Now, it is God’s turn. To put it boldly, even God is placed in a position where He has “no choice”. He had promised Abram that he would become a great nation, and for that covenant to be fulfilled, Sarai had to be protected. Yet, Abram had essentially sold her off. God is then “forced” to intervene by rebuking Pharaoh. While the outward narrative might resemble a “romance scam” where wealth is taken and the couple departs, beneath the surface lies God’s commitment to His word. Thanks to this, Abram returns to Canaan with the wealth needed to overcome the famine and becomes a man of great fortune.

A similar story repeats in Genesis 20. The target of the “romance scam” simply shifts from Pharaoh to Abimelech, but the narrative flow is identical. The Bible’s intention is clear: to emphasize that the fulfillment of the promise between God and Abram depends entirely on “God’s grace”. Humans are frail sinners who inevitably fall into sin and break their promises to God, yet God remains faithful in executing His covenant. Even if He must endure the “shame” of acting as an accomplice in a romance scam, He does His utmost for His people.

I, too, am an “inevitable” sinner, but through faith in Jesus Christ, I dwell within God’s promise just as Abram did. “Inevitable” situations will continue to unfold in my life, but nonetheless, my salvation will be guarded by God’s faithfulness. God’s promise is bound to the Cross of Jesus Christ, and within that “inevitable love,” I am safe. Therefore, I will not fear. However, I must strive to avoid the shame of being rebuked by the world, as Abram was by Pharaoh and Abimelech. Furthermore, I should not continually force God into “inevitable” and difficult positions. I resolve once again to stop making excuses based on the “logic of inevitability” and instead live by faith in every situation. For faith is not about being “unable to help it,” but about the belief that “nothing is impossible.” Amen.

This is the account of Jesus healing a man who had been blind from birth. In this brief passage, there are three significant misconceptions that we must address.

Seeing the blind man, the disciples asked, “Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”. This question assumes that the answer must be one or the other. Behind this inquiry lies a basic premise regarding God’s justice and power. As we all know, there is a cause and effect for everything, and the God who rules the world is absolutely just and almighty. Thus, the understanding is that good causes should lead to good results, and evil causes to evil results. In the case of this blind man, since an “evil” result was evident, their logic dictated that someone’s sin must have been the cause. However, looking a step deeper, any answer based on this logic is irrational. If it were his own sin, how could an unborn life commit a sin?. If it were his parents’ sin, why should an innocent baby have to suffer the unjust punishment of blindness for a choice they didn’t make?.

It is true that God is just and almighty. However, it is also true that there are countless misfortunes and absurdities in this world that we cannot understand or explain by the law of cause and effect. Since the Fall of humanity, not only has human nature been distorted, but nature itself has been out of joint. By God’s grace, humans are being partially saved, and nature is being partially restored. Yet, God’s salvation is not yet complete. One day, the Lord Jesus Christ will return and bring salvation to completion. Until then, as Paul states, “the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God” (Romans 8:21, NIV). Living in a distorted world among distorted people, incomprehensible misfortune and absurdity can occur, even if they aren’t necessarily anyone’s fault.

To the disciples’ question, Jesus replied, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him” (John 9:3, NIV). This answer can lead to a second misunderstanding: Does God use human misfortune as a tool to flaunt His own glory?. Being born blind is a tremendous misfortune from a human perspective. If such a great suffering is used merely as a momentary tool to show how good and glorious God is, then that person’s life feels utterly futile.

Of course, this is not the case. God’s glory is not so trivial. It is not the kind of glory that He barely receives by performing a “show” of healing a man after making him blind—much like the character Nolbu in Korean folklore who broke a swallow’s leg just to fix it. Rather, if our spirituality is awake, it means we can find God’s glory in every situation, even in those that appear evil.

Now, Jesus heals the blind man. However, the process is somewhat messy and cumbersome. He spits on the ground, makes some mud with the saliva, puts it on the man’s eyes, and tells him to go wash in the Pool of Siloam. This process triggers a third misunderstanding. Why use such an unconventional method when He could have just spoken a word?. When this happens, many people begin to study the efficacy of Jesus’ saliva, the components of the mud, or the pharmacological effects of the Siloam water. This is all in vain. Jesus simply wants obedience. He seems to expect obedience to be like the “priming water” for a miracle. A rational miracle might require only rational obedience. However, a miracle that transcends rationality may require obedience that also transcends rationality. (I say “may require” because this isn’t necessarily a fixed law; we cannot bind spiritual matters into human rules). Consider the miracle where Jesus turned water into wine. He first required the obedience of fetching water before making the wine. The water was the “priming water” for the wine. In any case, the content of obedience required is very individual, so one case cannot be substituted for another. Therefore, we should not try to apply specific methods other than holding onto the broad principle of “obedience”.

Once these three misunderstandings are resolved, the conclusion becomes clear: “As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (John 9:4-5, NIV) . While there is time, I must do what I can to reveal God’s glory. In every situation, there is room to work in this way. If a man born blind had the opportunity to live that way, then we certainly do as well . Rather than dwelling on the conditions and clinging to the question of “Why?”, we should consider “How” we can display God’s glory in the midst of it all.

날 때부터 소경 된 사람을 예수님이 고쳐주시는 사건이다. 이 짧은 본문에 풀어야 할, 가볍지 않은 오해가 세 개나 담겨있다.

소경을 보고 제자들이 묻는다. 이 사람이 소경으로 태어난 것은 본인의 죄 때문인가, 아니면 부모의 죄 때문인가? 대답은 둘 중 하나일 수밖에 없다는 것을 상정하고 묻는 질문이다. 이 질문 뒤에는 하나님의 공의와 권능에 대한 기본 전제가 깔려 있다. 모든 일에는 원인과 결과가 있기 마련인데, 우리 모두가 아는 바와 같이 세상을 다스리시는 하나님은 절대적으로 공의롭고 또 전능하시다. 그러므로 선한 원인에는 선한 결과가 따르고 악한 원인에는 악한 결과가 따라야 마땅하다는 이해다. 소경의 경우는 실존적으로 악한 결과가 드러났으므로 반드시 누군가의 죄가 원인을 제공했을 것이란 논리다. 그렇지만 한 걸음만 더 들어가서 따지면 이에 대한 어떤 대답도 불합리하다. 만약 본인의 죄라고 한다면, 태어나지도 않은 생명이 무슨 죄를 짓는다는 말인가. 만약 부모의 죄라고 한다면, 그것은 부모들의 몫이지 선택지 없이 그냥 태어난 아기가 왜 소경이라는 부당한 징벌을 받아야 한단 말인가.

하나님은 공의롭고 전능하신 분이 맞다. 그렇지만 세상에는 우리가 이해하지 못하는, 그리고 인과의 법칙으로 설명할 수 없는, 무수한 불행과 불합리가 존재하는 것도 사실이다. 인류 타락 이후에 인간성도 어긋났지만, 자연도 어긋났다. 하나님의 은혜로 사람도 부분적으로 구원받고 있고 자연도 부분적으로 회복되고 있다. 하지만 하나님의 구원이 완성된 것은 아니다. 언젠가는 주 예수 그리스도께서 다시 오셔서 구원을 완성하실 것이다. 그때까지 사람과 그 이외의 모든 피조물도 완전한 구원을 기다리고 있다고 바울은 진술한다(로마서 8:21). 어긋난 세상에서 어긋난 인간들이 모여 살고 있으니, 이해하지 못할 불행과 불합리는, 굳이 누구의 잘못이 아니더라도, 일어날 수 있는 것이다.

제자들의 질문에 대해 예수님이 이렇게 대답하신다. 누구의 죄 때문도 아니다. “하나님께서 하시는 일들을 그에게서 드러내시려는 것이다”. 이 대답이 두 번째 오해를 불러올 수 있다. 하나님은 당신의 영광을 과시하려고 인간의 불행을 도구로 사용하시는가 하는 오해다. 날 때부터 소경으로 태어나는 것은 한 인간의 입장에서는 너무나 큰 불행이다. 이렇게 큰 불행이, 단지 하나님이 얼마나 선하고 영광스러운 분인가를 드러내는 한 순간의 도구로 이용된다면, 한 인간의 삶은 너무 허망하다.

이 또한 당연히 아니다. 하나님의 영광이란 것이 그렇게 허접하지 않다. 놀부가 제비 다리 부러뜨리듯이, 한 인간을 소경으로 만들어놓고 고쳐주는 쇼를 해야 겨우 받을 수 있는 그런 영광이 아니다. 다만, 우리의 영성이 깨어있다면, 모든 상황 속에서, 비록 그 상황이 악해 보이는 것이라고 할지라도, 하나님의 영광을 찾아낼 수 있다는 말이다.

이제 예수님이 소경을 고쳐주신다. 그런데 그 과정이 좀 지저분하고 번거롭다. 침을 뱉어서 진흙을 이기고 그 진흙을 소경의 눈에 발라주고 실로암 물에 가서 씻으라고 하신다. 이 과정이 세 번째 오해를 불러일으킨다. 그냥 말씀만 하셔도 될 일을 왜 이렇게까지 파격적인 방법을 쓰시는가. 이런 일이 일어나면 많은 사람들이 예수님의 침의 효능과 진흙의 성분, 그리고 실로암 물의 약리작용에 대해서 연구하기 시작한다. 말짱 헛일이다. 예수님은 그냥 순종을 원하실 뿐이다. 순종을 마치 기적의 마중물처럼 기대하시는 것 같다. 합리적인 기적은 합리적인 순종으로 충분할 것이다. 하지만 합리성을 뛰어넘는 기적은 합리성을 뛰어넘는 순종을 요구할 수도 있다. (요구할 수도 있다고 표현한 것은 이것이 꼭 그렇다는 법칙은 아니기 때문이다. 영적인 일을 사람이 법칙으로 묶어둘 수는 없으니까). 예수님이 포도주를 만드신 기적을 생각해 보라. 물을 길어오는 순종을 먼저 요구하고 나서 포도주를 만드신다. 물이 포도주의 마중물이었던 셈이다. 아무튼 이 과정에서 요구되는 순종의 내용은 매우 개별적이어서 하나의 케이스를 다른 케이스에 대입할 수가 없다. 그러므로 “순종”이라는 큰 원리 하나를 붙잡는 것외에 다른 구체적인 방법을 적용하려고 하면 안 될 것이다.

세 가지의 오해를 다 풀고 나면 결론은 명료해진다. “아무도 일할 수 없는 밤이 곧 온다. 내가 세상에 있는 동안, 나는 세상의 빛이다”(4절). 시간이 있을 때, 하나님의 영광을 드러내기 위해서 내가 할 수 있는 일을 하는 것이다. 모든 상황 속에서 그렇게 일할 수 있는 여지가 있다. 날 때부터 소경으로 태어난 사람도 그렇게 살 여지가 있다면, 우리는 당연히 그럴 수 있다. 상황과 여건을 따지고, ‘왜’라는 질문에 매달리기 보다는, 그 가운데서 ‘어떻게’ 하나님의 영광을 드러낼 지 고민해봐야 할 것이다.

“To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” (John 8:31-32, NIV)

About 37 years ago, while I was attending seminary, I was preparing to plant a church in San Francisco. Driven by a burning passion to preach the Gospel wherever Korean people could be found, I headed to City College after hearing that there were quite a few Korean students there. Before entering the main building, I looked up and saw these words engraved: “The Truth Shall Make You Free.” I remember thinking that for the students passing by, those words might simply mean that if they studied hard, they would eventually enjoy more rights and opportunities in life. I am aware that these same words are also engraved at Yonsei University, which was founded by a Christian organization.

What did Jesus, the original author of these words, truly mean? This promise comes with a prerequisite: “If you hold to my teaching” (or “If you abide in my word”). When this condition is met, the result is that we truly become His disciples and come to know the truth. The final conclusion is that this very truth sets us free. We must then ask, what does it mean to “abide” in Jesus’ word? In verse 37, Jesus says to the Jews who were seeking to kill Him, “...you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word” (John 8:37, NIV). Ultimately, for us to abide in His word means for His word to have a place within us. Taking it a step further, having His word in us is equivalent to Jesus Himself dwelling within us. True freedom flows from Jesus—the Truth—who resides in our hearts.

Perhaps the most common misunderstanding of “truth” is viewing it only through the lens of ‘true’ versus ‘false.’ From the moment Jesus declared, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6, NIV), truth ceased to be a mere matter of factual correctness and became Jesus Himself. In other words, even if something is a factually verified “truth,” it cannot be the ultimate Truth if it does not contain the heart and character of Jesus. However, if Jesus is alive in my heart and His character rules over me, I am in the Truth and I am truly free.

About a year passed during which I met Korean students at City College, played tennis with them, shared meals, and studied the Bible in empty classrooms. One day, after a Bible study with about fifteen students, I invited them to confess their faith in Jesus as the Truth and accept Him as their Savior. Five of them made that commitment. On my way home that day, as I was passing through Golden Gate Park, tears began to pour down my face. I wept uncontrollably all the way cross the Golden Gate Bridge until I arrived at Golden Gate Seminary. Yet, my heart felt an indescribable sense of relief and clarity—as if a heavy burden had been lifted. It was a moment where I tasted a small piece of what it truly means for the Truth to set you free.

37년 전쯤, 신학교를 다니면서 샌프란시스코에 교회를 개척하려고 하고 있을 때였다. 한국 사람들이 있는 곳이면 어디든 가서 전도하겠다는 열정에 사로잡혀 있을 때, 시티 칼리지에 한국 학생들이 더러 있다는 소식을 듣고 무작정 캠퍼스로 갔다. 메인 빌딩 앞에서 들어가기 전에 위를 올려다보니 이런 글귀가 새겨져 있었다. “The Truth Shall Make You Free.” 아마 학생들이 그 글귀를 보면서 생각하는 것은, 공부 열심히 하면 나중에 더 많은 것들을 누리게 된다는 뜻 정도로 생각하지 않을까 하는 짐작이 들었다. 기독교 재단이 설립한 연세대학교에도 이 글귀가 새겨져 있는 것으로 안다.

원래 이 말씀의 원 저자이신 예수님은 무슨 뜻으로 이 말씀을 하셨을까? 이 말씀은 앞에 전제가 달려있다. “너희가 내 말에 거하면”이라는 전제다. 이 전제가 이루어졌을 때, 참으로 예수님의 제자가 되고, 진리를 알게 되는 결과값이 따라온다. 그리고 그 진리가 자유롭게 해준다는 결론이다. 그렇다면 예수님의 말씀 안에 거한다는 것은 어떤 의미일까를 물어야 한다. 37절에 가면 예수님이 자기를 죽이려고 하는 유대인들에게 이런 말씀을 하신다. 너희가 나를 죽이려고 하는 것은 “내 말이 너희 속에 있을 자리가 없기 때문이다”(새번역). 결국 우리가 예수님의 말씀 안에 거하는 것은 예수님의 말씀이 우리 안에 있는 것과 같은 의미라고 해석할 수 있다. 그리고 한 걸음 더 나아가서, 예수님의 말씀이 우리 안에 있는 것은 예수님이 우리 안에 거하시는 것과 같다. 그리고 자유는 우리 안에 거하시는 진리이신 예수님으로부터 오는 것이다.

진리에 대한 가장 보편적인 오해가 있다면 그것은 진리를 참(True)과 거짓(False)의 관점에서 보는 것이다. 예수님께서 “내가 길이요 진리요 생명이니”(요한복음 14:6)라고 말씀하신 순간부터 진리는 더 이상 참과 거짓의 문제가 아니라 예수님 자신이 된다. 말하자면, 아무리 팩트체크가 된 사실이라고 하더라도 예수님의 마음, 예수님의 인격이 담기지 않으면 진리가 될 수 없는 것이다. 그러나 내 마음속에 예수님이 살아 계시고, 그분의 인격이 나를 다스리고 있다면, 나는 진리 안에 있는 것이고 또한 자유하다.

시티 칼리지에서 한국 학생들을 만나서 같이 테니스도 치고, 밥도 먹고, 또 빈 강의실에서 성경 공부도 하면서 일 년 정도의 시간이 지났다. 어느 날, 열댓 명이 모여서 성경 공부를 하고 나서 진리이신 예수님을 믿음으로 고백하고 자신의 구세주로 영접하겠느냐고 초청했을 때 다섯 명이 결단을 했다. 그날 성경 공부를 마치고 집으로 돌아오는 길에, 골든게이트 공원을 지날 즈음 부터 눈물이 쏟아지기 시작했다. 골든게이트 다리를 건너면서도 계속 눈물이 났고 골든게이트 세미나리에 도착할 때까지 운전하는 내내 펑펑 울었다. 그런데 가슴은 뻥 뚫려 어디 한 군데 맺힌 데 없이 그렇게 시원할 수 없었다. 진리가 나를 자유롭게 한다는 의미의 한 조각을 맛보는 순간이었다.

There is a movie called “We Were Soldiers.” It is based on the true story of the Battle of Ia Drang in Vietnam, which took place in November 1965. Mel Gibson played the role of Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore, and his famous ‘No one left behind’ speech, delivered before his men boarded the air-assault helicopters, is well-known. The gist of the speech is as follows: “I can’t promise you that I will bring you all home alive. But I can promise you this: that when we step into the operational area, I will be the first one to step onto the ground. And I will be the last one to step onto the helicopter when we leave the operational area. I will leave no one behind. Live or dead, we will all come home.” It was a truly stirring speech. Soldiers who hear a speech from a leader like this would be able to follow him in any dangerous mission without turning back.

The main passage today features a declaration that is the complete opposite of this speech. “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come” (John 8:21, NIV). This was Jesus’ word to the Pharisees and the Jews. It might be the most tragic statement among all of Jesus’ words. It means that after Jesus leaves, they will be utterly left behind and tragically abandoned. Why did Jesus speak such a cold and harsh word?

In truth, Jesus’ heart desired to leave no one behind. “And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day” (John 6:39, NIV). Jesus knew this was the will of God the Father from the beginning of His ministry. And just before His arrest, He said this: “This was to fulfill the word he had spoken: “I have not lost one of those you gave me” (John 18:9, NIV). While the direct interpretation of this saying may be that Jesus intended to protect His disciples by letting only Himself be arrested, the spiritual meaning contained within this word is much broader. It embraces all of humanity. The Lord desired to save everyone, leaving no one behind. Yet, there are people who are left behind, regardless of the Lord’s intent.

Jesus Christ is the Savior, meaning the One who saves. The Savior is an urgently needed benefactor for those who need salvation, but He is not an attractive figure at all to those who do not know or refuse to acknowledge that they need salvation. Thus, no matter how much the Savior calls and invites, they do not listen. It is not the Lord who abandons them, but they are left behind by their persistent rejection of the invitation of grace. Whenever they asked, “Who are you?” the Lord answered, “I am he” (verses 24, 28). (The Korean Saebeonyeok translates this as “I am who I am,” but most other translations render it as “I am he”). He repeatedly told them that He was the Christ, the Savior, but they did not listen.

This cold and harsh word in verse 21 is the Savior’s sorrowful warning that He could not help but speak, as the inevitable end was so obvious. It is the desperate invitation of the Savior who desires to leave no one behind. Lieutenant Colonel Moore promised to bring everyone home, live or dead, leaving no one behind. This promise includes return home but not life itself. Furthermore, this is a promise that Lieutenant Colonel Moore can keep only if he himself survives. However, our Savior promised to lose none and raise them all up on the last day. Resurrection and eternal life are all within that promise. And our Savior gave up His own life to keep this promise. Therefore, following the Lord is incomparably more glorious than following Lieutenant Colonel Moore. No one will be left behind, except for those who choose to leave themselves.

“We Were Soldiers” 라는 영화가 있다. 1965년 11월에 있었던 베트남 이아 드랑 전투의 실화를 바탕으로 만들어진 영화다. 멜깁슨이 해롤드 무어 중령의 역할을 맡았는데 그가 부대원들을 데리고 공중 투입 헬기에 오르기 전에 했던 No one left behind라는 연설이 유명하다. 그 대략의 내용은 이렇다. 나는 여러분을 다 살려서 집에 데려간다고 약속할 수 없다. 그러나 이것은 약속할 수 있다. 우리가 작전지역에 내릴 때, 제일 먼저 땅을 밟는 사람은 내가 될 것이다. 작전지역을 떠날 때 제일 마지막에 헬기에 오르는 사람도 내가 될 것이다. 나는 아무도 뒤에 남겨두지 않겠다. 살았거나, 혹 죽었거나. 우리 모두는 집에 돌아가게 될 것이다. 정말로 가슴 뭉클하게 하는 연설이었다. 이런 리더에게 이런 연설을 듣는 병사들은 어떤 위험한 임무에서도 도망치지 않고 리더를 따를 수 있을 것이다.

오늘 본문에는 이와는 정반대의 연설문이 등장한다. “나는 가고 너희는 나를 찾다가 너희의 죄 가운데서 죽을 것이다. 그리고 내가 가는 곳에 너희는 올 수 없다”(8:21, 새번역). 예수님이 바리새파 유대인들에게 하신 말씀이다. 예수님의 대사 가운데 가장 비극적인 대사가 아닐까 싶다. 예수님이 떠나신 후, 그들은 철저히 남겨질 것이고 처절하게 버려질 것이라는 말이다. 왜 예수님은 이렇게 차갑고 모진 말을 하셨을까.

사실 예수님의 마음은 아무도 뒤에 남겨두고 싶지 않으셨다. “나를 보내신 이의 뜻은 내게 주신 자 중에 내가 하나도 잃지 않고 마지막 날에 다시 살리는 이것이니라“(요한복음 6:39). 예수님은 사역 초기부터 그것이 하나님 아버지의 뜻임을 알고 계셨다. 그리고 체포되기 직전에 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “이는 아버지께서 내게 주신 자 중에서 하나도 잃지 아니하였사옵나이다 하신 말씀을 응하게 하려 함이러라” (요한복음 18:9). 물론 이 말씀의 직접적인 해석은 예수님 자신만 체포되고 제자들은 보호하기를 원하신 의도로 해석할 수 있지만, 이 말씀에 함유된 영적 의미는 범위가 훨씬 더 넓다. 온 인류를 품는다. 주님은 한 사람도 뒤에 남겨두지 않고 다 구원하기를 원하셨다. 그러나 주님의 의도와 상관없이 남겨지는 사람들이 있다.

예수 그리스도는 구세주이시다. 구원해주시는 분이란 뜻이다. 구세주는 구원이 필요한 사람에게는 너무나 절실한 은인이지만 스스로 구원이 필요하다는 것을 알지 못하거나 , 혹은 인정하지 않는 사람들에게는 전혀 매력적인 존재가 아니다. 하여 그들은 구세주가 아무리 부르고 청하여도 듣지 않는다. 주님께서 뒤에 버려두는 것이 아니라 그들이 끝끝내 은혜의 초대를 거절함으로 남겨지는 것이다. 그들이, “당신이 누구입니까?” 라고 물을 때마다 주님은 “내가 그”라고 답하신다(24, 28절. 새번역에는 “내가 곧 나다”라고 번역했으나 대부분의 다른 번역본은 “내가 그다(I am He)라고 번역한다). 당신께서 구세주 그리스도되심을 누누이 말하고 있지만 그들은 듣지 않았다.

21절의 이 차갑고 모진 말은, 너무나 뻔히 보이는 결말이기에, 말하지 않을 수 없는 구세주의 안타까운 경고다. 아무도 뒤에 남겨두지 않으려는 구세주의 절박한 초대다. 무어중령은, 살았든 죽었든, 아무도 뒤에 남겨두지 않고 다 집으로 데려가겠다고 약속했다. 이 약속에 귀향은 포함되지만 생명은 포함되지 않는다. 그리고 이 약속은 무어중령 자신이 살아있어야 지킬 수 있는 약속이다. 하지만 우리의 구세주는, 하나도 잃어버리지 않고 마지막 날에 다 살리겠다고 약속하셨다. 부활과 영생이 다 약속 안에 있다. 그리고 우리의 구세주는 이 약속을 지키기 위해서 자신의 생명을 스스로 내어놓으셨다. 그러니 무어중령을 따르는 일보다 주님을 따르는 일은 비교할 수 없을 정도로 더 영광스럽다. 아무도 뒤에 남겨지지 않을 것이다. 단, 스스로 남겨지는 사람 외에는.
